NEWS AND NOTES

The series with Rhode Island: UAlbany has won the past three meetings between the programs and three of four overall. Rhode Island’s only victory over the Great Danes came Sept. 14, 2013, when the Rams won, 19-13, in overtime in the opening game at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. UAlbany hasn’t lost to Rhode Island under head coach Greg Gattuso (3-0), and in last year’s meeting, Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks ran for three touchdowns and 178 yards in a 35-7 UAlbany victory at Rhode Island.

Strength of schedule: UAlbany’s schedule includes six teams currently ranked in the STATS FCS Top 25 as well as a season-opening game against FBS opponent Old Dominion.

  • Between Sept. 23 and Oct. 7, the Great Danes played three consecutive games against ranked opponents: Villanova (then No. 7/8), Elon (then No. 23/RV) and Richmond (then No. 14/14).
  • Against Villanova, UAlbany recorded its first ever victory over a Top 10 team, winning 19-10 at Casey Stadium.
  • UAlbany’s final three games are against teams ranked in the current STATS Top 25: at Stony Brook, at Delaware and vs. New Hampshire.

Robinson excels at corner: UAlbany’s Jamal Robinson, a senior from Mitchellville, Md., is enjoying a standout season.

  • Robinson has been credited with nine passes defended, the fourth-most in the CAA.
  • Against Maine, Robinson recorded his first interception of the season and fifth of his career. He also was UAlbany’s co-leader (Eli Mencer) with 12 tackles, including six solo.
  • Robinson has appeared in every game during his career and was a member of the CAA All-Academic team in each of his first three seasons.
  • Robinson expects to graduate in December with his undergraduate degree in sociology. He plans to pursue a career in law enforcement or coaching.

McDonald shines on returns: Sophomore wide receiver Donovan McDonald has been a special-teams standout since taking over the punt-return duties in Week 2 against Morgan State and returning kickoffs.

  • The transfer from Nebraska, where he both played football and ran middle-distances for the track team, leads the CAA and ranks No. 16 nationally with an average of 25.4 yards per kickoff return.
  • McDonald is second in the CAA and 16th nationally with an average of 11.0 yards per punt return.
  • On Sept. 21, the coaching staff surprised McDonald by announcing before practice that he was being granted a full scholarship.
  • At receiver, McDonald has 13 catches for 169 yards with two touchdowns.
