Leading the Pack

  • The Great Danes will be looking for their sixth straight victory in a home opener. Last season, UAlbany defeated Morgan State, 30-27, in the first home game of 2018.
  • Redshirt freshman QB Jeff Undercuffler set a new career high with 199 passing yards in the season-opener against Central Michigan. He also threw a pair of TD passes to Juwan Green.
  • DE/LB Eli Mencer had a spectacular strip sack/fumble-returned-for-touchdown at Central Michigan.
  • S AJ Mistler led the defense with 11 tackles in the opener.

Scouting Bryant

  • This marks the Bulldogs’ second straight game against a CAA opponent after having opened the season with a 35-10 loss at Stony Brook. The Seawolves led 14-3 at halftime and then pulled away after scoring on three of their first four possessions after the intermission.
  • Bryant is coming off a 6-5 season (2-4 NEC).
  • This marks UAlbany’s second consecutive game against an opponent with a first-year coach. Chris Merritt was hired at Bryant after having coached the past 20 years at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Fla.
  • Bryant was picked fifth in the eight-team NEC’s preseason poll.

It’s gonna be a good night

Promotions scheduled for the home opener include a pregame concert by Madison VanDenburg in the Pepsi Pregame and a postgame fireworks show! Also, be sure to WEAR WHITE to help us white out Casey Stadium.

Hello again

UAlbany and Bryant were NEC rivals for four years before the Great Danes moved to the CAA in 2013. Their all-time series is tied 2-2, including 1-1 in games played in Albany.

            2012: W, 31-14

            2011: L, 31-17

            2010: L, 24-7

            2009: W, 20-17

Schedule strength

Once again, the Great Danes will play a formidable schedule. The nonconference slate includes an FBS opponent (Central Michigan) and Monmouth, picked to finish second in the Big South Preseason Poll. CAA opponents Maine (No. 6), Towson (No. 8) and Delaware (No. 21) all are ranked in the STATS Top 25 poll, while Stony Brook, Richmond, New Hampshire and Rhode Island all are receiving votes.

Three cheers

Eli Mencer, Levi Metheny and Dev Holmes were named Colonial Athletic Association Preseason All-Conference Honorable Mention. Mencer, a redshirt senior, and Metheny, a redshirt junior, were two-thirds of the Great Danes’ starting linebacker corps in 2018. Mencer, also a standout on special teams, was named as a specialist. Holmes, a sophomore, made the team at wide receiver.

Notables

  • Bryant is 4-13 against current members of the CAA.
  • UAlbany was 78-24 and won six titles during its 14 years as a member of the NEC.
