Cross Country Releases 2017 Schedule
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany cross country program has released its 2017 season schedule. The Great Danes will compete in four meets leading up to the America East Championships, with the potential for three postseason meets to end the season.
The season kicks off on September 2 with the America East Pre-Conference Meet at Vermont, the site of the America East Championship later in the season. For the past two years, the team has opened at Colgate’s Harry Lang Invitational, and hasn’t competed in the Pre-Conference Meet since 2013 when Binghamton was the host.
Two weeks later, on September 22, the team will visit Boston’s Franklin Park for the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown hosted by Boston College. In five of the last seven seasons, the team has used this weekend to compete in Iona’s Meet of Champions, but will be competing in Boston for the second time in the last three years.
While the schedule predominantly adheres to head coach Matt Jones’ philosophy of competing once every other week during the cross country season, the team will see a short turnaround before the third meet, the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh on September 29.
The lone home meet of the 2017 schedule will take place on October 14. The program will host the 51st annual Great Dane Invitational, as well as the third UAlbany track & field and cross country Wall of Fame induction ceremony, and the first senior ring ceremony. Both the men and the women won the team titles last season, and Ryan Udvadia will return as the defending men’s individual champion.
On October 28, the team will return to Vermont for America East XC Championships, where the men placed second and the women placed sixth in the team standings last season. The men had two runners, Udvadia and Kyle Gronostaj, place in the top five.
Following the conference championships, the Great Danes will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at the University of Buffalo on November 10. It is only the second time since 2012 that the meet has not been held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
The final two meets of the schedule take place on consecutive days, and attendance at either meet will be made at a later date. IC4A and ECAC Championships are scheduled for November 17 at Van Cortlandt Park, while NCAA XC Championships will take place on November 18 in Louisville, Kentucky. The last Great Dane to qualify for nationals was Silvia Del Fava in 2013, and she remains the program’s lone Division I NCAA qualifier.
