BRADENTON, Fla. – Currently overseeing University at Albany alumna Grace Claxton’s training at the IMG Academy, UAlbany Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives has been named hurdles and 4x400m relay coach for the Puerto Rico National Team for two upcoming championship meets.
"It is an honor to serve Puerto Rico, which is the birthplace of my parents, Juan and Paula, in this capacity," Vives said.
Vives will preside over his event groups at the Central America and Caribbean Games, which take place in Barranquilla, Columbia from July 29-August 3, and the North America, Central America, and Caribbean Senior Championships in Toronto, running from August 10-12.
The Puerto Rico team, including Claxon and UAlbany alumnus Ricardo Estremera, is currently training at the IMG Academy in preparation for the championship meets.
This is Vives’ latest stint as coach for Puerto Rico, having previously served for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio and the 2016 and 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon and Birmingham, United Kingdom, respectively. Vives has also served as a coach for Team USA, instructing the jumps and multis at the NACAC Championships in Costa Rica in 2015.
Claxton is scheduled to compete in the 400m hurdles and the 4x400m relay, while Estremera will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase this summer.
