Banfield, Hibbard Named Performers Of The Week

UAlbany Sports Information   12-05-2017

BOSTON – The 2017-18 indoor track & field season has commenced, and the University at Albany has landed two student-athletes among the first America East Performers of the Week selections. Myles Banfield was named for men’s track and Anika Hibbard was named for women’s field.

Banfield, a junior from Markham, Canada, won the 300m at the Boston University Season Opener for the second consecutive season. Last year, Banfield’s time of 33.84 set the UAlbany indoor school record in the event and simultaneously broke the existing Boston University facility record of 34.37 set in 2016 by the Terriers’ own Cameron Williams. This year, Banfield repeated the feat in victory, crossing the line in 33.62, a time which currently ranks as fastest in the country. His day was not finished, as Banfield went on to anchor the second-place finishing 4x400m relay with a split of 47.0. The team’s overall time of 3:13.96 is the fastest a UAlbany men’s 4x400m relay has run in the month of December in program history.

Hibbard, a junior from Bedford, N.H., won the women’s high jump, clearing a height of 5-07.00. Her best final height on the day, which satisfied the ECAC qualifying standard, was matched by Holy Cross’ Caroline Hitchcock, but Hibbard was awarded the victory on the basis of having fewer failed attempts at lower heights. Hibbard’s field performer selection is shared with New Hampshire’s Rachel Morrison, who also cleared 5-07.00 in the high jump in a dual meet against Maine. The two women rank in a tie for ninth in their event nationally.

New Hampshire’s Elinor Purrier was named for women’s track, and fellow Wildcat Michael Shanahan was named for men’s field. The Great Danes have one meet remaining before the winter intersession, the UConn Multi Meet, where the multis competitors will have their first opportunity this season to compete in their full events. After the New Year, UAlbany will begin the indoor season in earnest on January 13 with the Great Dane Classic.
