Claxton, Igwe, DelVescovo, and Gueye Named Performers of the Week
BOSTON-Four UAlbany Great Danes have been named America East Performers of the Week after their performance in the Boston University Season Opener this past weekend. In the season opener, UAlbany swept all four titles with sprinter Grace Claxton earning Women’s Track Performer of the Week; Chinwe Igwe won Women’s Field Performer of the Week. Freshman Lamine Gueye won Men’s Track Performer of the Week, and Eric DelVescovo took the title of Men’s Field Performer of the Week.
The Boston University Season Opener served as the first official meet for the Great Danes, who normally don’t start competing until early January. Grace Claxton placed first overall in the 300-meter race in 37.93. Her time set a new school record, facility record, and a Puerto Rican National Record. Claxton also placed fourth in the 60-hurdles in 8.83.Senior Chinwe Igwe won the women’s weight throw, edging out her competition with a mark of 61-5.75.
Lamine Gueye had strong performances in his first collegiate meet. He tied the UAlbany freshman record in 60m, running a 6.87 to win the event. In the 300-meter race, Gueye placed second in a time of 33.90 to earn a new freshman record. Senior Eric DelVescovo placed third in the shot put with a mark of 52-10 (16.10m). His mark broke the 26-year-old school record (16.06m) set by Matthew Kiely in 1990.Next up for UAlbany, is the Great Dane Classic on January, 14 at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, NY.
