Longtime Administrator Charlie Voelker Stepping Down
ALBANY, N.Y. — After 114 championships, 24 years and two degrees, Charlie Voelker, the University at Albany’s longtime Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, is retiring from the department to pursue other opportunities.
Since he first joined UAlbany Athletics in 1996 as a color commentator for football and basketball radio broadcasts, Voelker has worked tirelessly to promote the department’s 18 Division I programs. His efforts have touched virtually every area of the department, from ticketing and marketing to video production and media relations.
“Charlie’s contributions to UAlbany Athletics are immeasurable,” said Mark Benson, UAlbany’s Director of Athletics. “His positive attitude and enthusiasm for promoting our programs for more than two decades have been integral to our success. But most importantly, he has been a friend to all of us. We’ll miss Charlie, and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life.”
Calling UAlbany games on television and radio with the same pizazz he brings to the office every day, Voelker has been behind the microphone for some of UAlbany’s biggest victories, including former men’s basketball coach Doc Sauer’s 700th win in 1997. In recent years, he has continued to serve as the TV voice of Great Danes football, women's basketball and men's lacrosse, as well.
Voelker moved into his first full-time position in the department in 2003, as the Director of Corporate Sales and Tickets. During his tenure, he has generated close to $10 million in corporate sales and donations and was the brains behind countless marketing campaigns.
"I cannot begin to thank Mark Benson and the University enough for allowing me to be part of the Great Dane family,” Voelker said. “The championships have been wonderful, but the real reward has been the true friendships I have made with so many people in the department and on campus. I want to thank our coaches, our staff, our student-athletes and our fans. We've had a lot of fun together, and I will forever cherish you and my time at UAlbany. Go Danes!"
Voelker also has been the longtime sport administrator for baseball and softball, as well as supervising field hockey, golf and men’s soccer over the years. Altogether, he has been on UAlbany’s staff for all but one of the department’s 115 Division I conference championships.
Voelker holds two degrees from UAlbany, earned 31 years apart — a bachelor’s communication in 1987, and a masters in Education, Leadership & Policy and in 2018.
His immediate plans include spending more time with his family and catching a lot of fish.
