Commitment to Education Day Set for January 24
ALBANY, N.Y. – On January 24, the University at Albany will host its 12th annual Commitment to Education day, as the women’s basketball team will face Vermont in a special 11:00 a.m. game at SEFCU Arena. Each year, the Great Danes welcome local elementary and middle schools to campus for a great day of fun and educational experiences, along with a specially scheduled early game time.
“Commitment to Education Day is really one of the highlights of the basketball season,” said UAlbany Director of Athletics Mark Benson. “We host nearly 2,000 young fans at the game. They get to interact with our student-athletes from all sports and learn a little bit of what it is like to be a college athlete. Many of these children have never been on a college campus, so we hope it keeps them thinking about the importance of education. We sincerely thank SEFCU and CDPHP for continually sponsoring this event.”
“We are excited to once again host Commitment to Education Day,” said women's head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee. “We love having so many kids in the crowd cheering on their favorite team. It is a tremendous opportunity for us to connect with the young kids in our community, and it showcases to our players as collegiate athletes the importance of being role models for the next generation.”
The students in attendance will follow a program featuring speakers from UAlbany’s strength and conditioning staff, the Education Department, current student-athletes, and SEFCU. UAlbany student-athletes will speak to the audience about their experiences balancing academics and athletics and the cheerleading team and Damien will lead the loud cheers. The students will watch the 11:00 a.m. game and finish with an autograph session with the players on the women’s basketball team.
Nearly 1,400 students from 15 schools will be in attendance for the event, including Berne-Knox-Westerlo Elementary, Forts Ferry Elementary, Yates Elementary, Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy, Arbor Hill Elementary, Eagle Point Elementary, Elsmere Elementary, School 2, New Scotland Elementary, Mont Pleasant Middle School, Carroll Hill School, Lynnwood Elementary, Pine Bush Elementary, Schoharie Country ARC, and Teragon Elementary.
