UAlbany Sports Information   04-28-2019

Score: UAlbany 1, UMBC 0 (11 innings)

Records: UAlbany (25-13, 12-2) | UMBC (24-21, 5-10)

Short Story: In a pitchers’ duel that saw 10-plus scoreless innings, senior Aliyah Wade drove in the game-winning run in the 11th inning to lift the University at Albany softball team to an exciting 1-0 walk-off victory against UMBC on Senior Day.

Highlights:

  • Aliyah Wade (2-for-5) was the only player to record a pair of hits in the game.
  • Celeste Verdolivo earned her 17th win of the season after allowing just three hits to go along with three strikeouts in a complete game shutout.
  • Alexis Phillips finished the day 1-for-3 with a walk and scored the game-winning run.
  • Courtney Coppersmith went the distance for UMBC, striking out six batters in the loss.

Recap:

Aliyah Wade played the hero as her single in the 11th inning lifted the Great Danes to an extra-inning victory against UMBC on Sunday afternoon.

Wade finished the day 2-for-3, as five Great Danes recorded hits on the afternoon, including Mariah Miramontez who’s poke helped set up the game-winning run in the 11th.

Celeste Verdolivo (17-4) earned the victory, pitching all 11 innings of the shutout, while striking out three, walking two and allowing just three hits.

UAlbany threatened with a pair of runners in the first and again in the second but Courtney Coppersmith would retire the side to keep the game scoreless. Coppersmith pitched all 10-plus innings for the Retrievers, striking out six in the process.

Verdolivo carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning, but a one-out single by Maddie Daigneau spoiled the bid. Verdolivo would retire the next two batters and get out of the jam.

Amelia Ely drew a leadoff walk in the seventh but the Great Danes again couldn’t capitalize as the Retrievers ended the inning on a “strike ‘em out, throw ‘em” out double play.

UMBC landed a runner on first to begin the 10th, following a defensive miscue by the Great Danes, but was eventually stranded.

It was over in the 11th, when Alexis Phillips led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Miramontez and scored on a walk-off RBI single by Wade.

Next Up: The Great Danes wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against America East foe UMass Lowell this weekend.
