How It Happened:
UAlbany (1-4) dropped a 4-2 decision against Middle Tennessee (7-7) to wrap up the Madeira Beach Invitational in Madeira, Fla. on Sunday.
Petzold and Bump went 2-for-3 to pace the Great Danes offense. Two other team members logged one hit, including Katie Falotico who scored a run in the outing.
The first two innings saw a handful of baserunners but neither team would change the scoreboard until the bottom half of the third. Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a single scored Sydney Heath.
The Great Danes knotted the score, 1-1 in the fifth, moving a base runner over to second before Lové Drumgole scored on a throwing error. UAlbany took their only lead off the game when Falotico scored on a single from Petzold the very next at bat.
A three-run fifth inning for Middle Tennessee proved to be the difference maker in Sunday’s rubber match. Celeste Verdolivo, who came in to relieve Chloe Lewis, retired the first two batters she faced, the Blue Raiders took the upper hand, 4-2, with three runs on three hits and one walk.
UAlbany threatened with a pair of leadoff singles in the six and seventh innings, respectively, but Middle Tennessee was able to get itself out of the jam and hold on for the victory.
Up Next: The Great Danes head south to Virginia next weekend as part of the Patriot Classic. UAlbany will kick off the weekend with a pair of games on Friday against Colgate and George Mason.
