Location: Madeira Beach Invitational, Madeira Beach, Fla.

Short Story: Sophomore Alexis Phillips batted .500 (1-2) on Friday, as the UAlbany softball team (0-2) dropped a pair of decisions at the Madeira Beach Invitational on opening weekend.

How It Happened:

Game One North Florida

North Florida struck first in the fifth inning with a leadoff walk from Rindy Bryant who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Navia Penrod joined Bryant on the bases off a fielder’s choice before Mary Rodriguez executed a sac bunt to load the pond.

The Great Danes got the next batter on a flyout before a pass ball allowed runners to move and North Florida took a 1-0 advantage. Paige Pfent then sent a deep ball to right field for a triple, tacking on a pair of runs.

Dominica Cocuzza send an RBI single into the outfield to cap off a four-run inning for the Osprey.

Aliyah Wade scored UAlbany’s lone run for the day in the sixth after reaching first on an error by the second baseman. She advanced to second on a single from Chelsea Henige before a scoring on a single from Kelly Barkevich. UAlbany had a chance to cut the deficit once again with players on second and third but could not plate a run.

UAlbany looked to Chloe Lewis and the bullpen to shut down the Osprey offense. Lewis racked up a pair of strike outs and held North Florida hitless in two innings of relief.

North Florida’s bullpen kept the bases clear in the seventh to secure the 4-0 victory.

Game Two South Dakota:

Aliyah Wade walked in the first and Alexis Phillips singled in the third, but both were stranded. Phillips recorded the lone hit for the Great Danes.

South Dakota broke open the scoring in the third inning. Ashtyn Blakeman picked up her second hit of the game with a single to up the middle before advancing to second on a sac bunt. Dustie Durham sent the next pitch into the gap, replacing Blakeman who crossed the plate for the 1-0 lead. The Coyotes grew their advantage to 2-0 on a deep single from Jessica Rogers to plate Durham.
