Great Danes Split With UMass Lowell, Earn No. 2 Seed in AE Tourney

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team split Saturday’s twin bill against UMass Lowell, winning the first game 5-4, before faltering 7-4 in game two.

- Amelia Ely went 3-for-6 with two runs scored.
- Katie Falotico hit 3-for-7 with one run scored.

Maranda Jimenez went the distance in the circle, striking out five batters, to improve to 5-4 on the year. The trio of Mariah Miramontez, Amelia Ely and Love Drumgole each logged a pair of hits, including a one-run single from Ely.
The Great Danes got to work early with a run in the first inning. Mariah Miramontez reached safely with a leadoff bunt before advancing to second on a ball put in play by Aliyah Wade. Sarah Petzold later delivered with a two-out double that plated Miramontez and gave her squad the 1-0 lead.
In the home half of the inning, UMass Lowell was able to scratch across a run to knot the score 1-1. It was Sarah Siteman who came up with the timely hit, dropping in a blooper to left field that scored Olivia Labbe who reached base with an outfield single.
The visitors extended their lead to as many as three runs in the fourth inning. Kelly Spear singled, Chelsea Henige walked and Drumgole logged a single of her own to loaded the bases for the Great Danes. Alexis Phillips kept things going with an RBI walk before Courtney Courtade scored on a fielder’s choice. Drumgole then stole home two pitches later to cap off the three-run inning.
The Great Danes tacked on another run in the fifth, as Kelly Spear’s RBI single made it a 5-1 game.
The home team fought their back into the game, scoring three unanswered runs spanning the fifth and sixth innings. After a two-run shot by Maria Moccio made it a two-run game in the fifth, Melany Sheldon followed with a solo shot of her own to cut the difference to one, 5-4.
The River Hawks’ would threaten with a pair of runners in the bottom of the third but Jimenez retired the side to get out of the jam and solidify the Great Danes win.
It was the River Hawks who carried a 2-0 advantage after three complete innings. Casey Harding broke open the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning, before Brianna West’s RBI single in the third doubled the team’s lead.
The Great Danes used a fifth inning three-run rally to take their first lead of the contest. Alexis Phillips was responsible for the damage, as the sophomore roped a base-clearing triple over the left fielder’s head to plate Drumgole, Courtade and Swiatek for the 3-2 advantage.
The home team didn’t trail for long, using a three-run homerun to jump ahead 5-3.
Katie Falotico led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle before capitalizing on a UMass Lowell throwing error that allowed her to advance all the way to third, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Shaye Swiatek.
Harding tacked on a pair of insurance runs for the River Hawks to make it 7-4, smacking her second home run of the game, putting the Great Danes out of reach.
