UAlbany Picked First In AE Preseason Poll
BOSTON, Mass. — The votes are in and the University at Albany softball team was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2019 America East Coaches Poll. The voting was done by the conference’s seven head coaches, none of whom were allowed to vote for their own team.
The Great Danes won their second consecutive and the program’s seventh America East Championship in 2018.
UAlbany finished with 34 points and got four of the seven first-place votes. UMass Lowell and Stony Brook rounded out the top three with 32 and 24 points, respectively. UMass Lowell garnered the remaining three first-place votes.
Maine (21 points) and Binghamton (18 points ) were voted to finish fourth and fifth, while Hartford (10 points ) and UMBC (eight points) earned the final two spots.
This season the America East tournament will be played from May 8-11 at the campus of the highest overall seed. UAlbany seeks its third consecutive conference title, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since the Great Danes won in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
2018 America East Coach of the Year Chris Cannata returns for her 25th season at the helm. Senior pitcher Celeste Verdolivo, the 2018 America East Pitcher of the Year, Chelsea Henige, McKenzie Bump and Sarah Petzold are UAlbany’s top returning players this year, having been named first-team all-conference in 2018.
UAlbany opens its 2019 campaign at the Madeira Beach Softball Invitational February 22-24.
