Short Story: The UAlbany softball team fell to the top-seeded Oregon in the first round of the NCAA Regional in Eugene, Oregon. The Great Danes will face BYU tomorrow at 8:30pm (EST).
How It Happened:
The UAlbany Great Danes faced the #1 Oregon Ducks in the first round of the NCAA Eugene Regional on Thursday, May 17th.
The first two innings of the game were scoreless for both teams.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the second, junior pitcher Celeste Verdolivo struck out Oregon’s Jenna Lilley, closing out the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Oregon’s Gwen Svekis foul flied out to left field as Sarah Petzold ran towards the wall, reaching for the ball to catch it as it was going over the fence to record the out. Shannon Rhodes went up to bat next and foul flied out to Petzold again, who caught the ball over the left field line. Oregon scored one run in the bottom of the third inning off of a single by DJ Sanders.
Oregon put three more runs up on the board in the fifth inning to give them the four run lead that they would hold through the completion of the game. The final score was 4-0 Oregon.
Comments From Head Coach Chris Cannata:
“I was really proud of how we competed today. Oregon is a great team and this is a really tough environment to play in. Celeste pitched an outstanding game against one of the best lineups in the country. I’m really happy with the way we competed today and expect us to bring the same energy and grit tomorrow against BYU.”
