ALBANY, N.Y.— The bracket has been revealed: the UAlbany Softball team will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to face the University of Alabama at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional on Friday, May 19th at 5 PM.
"We are very excited to be going to play Alabama in the regionals. They are a great team that are coached by one of the best coaches in the game. They play in a beautiful stadium that will be filled to capacity and that atmosphere will be an amazing thing for our kids to get to experience," said head coach Chris Cannata.
The game will take place at Rhoads Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama. The stadium was opened in 2000 and has a seating capacity of 3,940. Alabama is the No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 42-16. The Crimson Tide received an at-large bid after falling in their conference tournament to Ole Miss 4-1.
UAlbany earned its way into the NCAA Tournament with the America East Conference automatic qualifier, defeating Maine 6-1 on Sunday afternoon for the league title. The Great Danes advanced through the winner's bracket in the tournament with an overall record of 4-1.
"I'm so happy for them and so proud of them. There were so many times that we could have folded under the pressure, but they kept their focus and their composure and they never flinched. I couldn't have scripted a better ending for our seniors," said Cannata.
The NCAA Softball Regionals will be held May 18-21 on 16 campus sites. At each campus site, a four-team, double-elimination tournament will be conducted and the 16 winning teams advance to the Super Regionals.
Super Regionals for the championship will be held May 25-28 on eight campus sites. At each site, two teams play in a best-of-three tournament format. The winners from each site advance to the NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS).
