Softball Heads to San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Great Danes head to San Juan, Puerto Rico to compete in the Puerto Rico Classico. UAlbany will play five games in Puerto Rico and will face three different teams. Out of the three teams, UAlbany holds the best win percentage with an overall record of 7-4.

Last weekend, the Great Danes went 3-2 at the North Florida Invitational with notable wins over La Salle, Western Carolina, and Mount St. Mary’s- MD. Senior, Liz Snow was the back-to-back America East Player of the Week, while freshman Bailey Turner was honored as America East's Rookie of the Week.

FURMAN (10-11) The past three weekends Furman has competed in their own college town of Greenville, South Carolina. Furman had a 3-game win-streak with wins over Georgetown (11-6), Colgate (3-2 in 9 innings), and Campbell (5-3). Earlier this season, Furman competed against Howard, another competitor in the Puerto Rico Classico, winning 8-0 in 5 innings. The team has an overall .251 batting average and a .317 on base percentage.
KEY PLAYER: Left-handed pitcher, Lyndsey Bert has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week two times in the last four weeks. She has a 2.16 earned run average with a 5-6 record on the mound. She totals 52 strike outs in 12 games.

FLORIDA A&M (3-16-1) Florida A&M has faced tough competition this season including the #2 University of Florida, #18 the University of Kentucky, #5 Florida State, and #26 UCF. The Rattler’s knocked off the University of Maryland, a Big Ten team, with a score of 5-1 totaling nine hits. Texas A&M has a team batting average of .188 and a slugging percentage of .260.
KEY PLAYER: Sophomore, Alexis Day leads the team with 13 hits and 7 RBIs. She has recorded one double and seven RBIs. Defensively in the outfield she has recorded 13 putouts and one assist.

HOWARD (0-10) Howard has yet to win a game in the 2017 season. Against Western Carolina, who the Danes played last weekend (W 1-0), Howard lost 0-14 in five innings. In the 2016 season, the Bison showed a similar pattern in the beginning of the season; however, they then split three double headers in a row against UMBC, North Carolina Central, and Virginia State.
KEY PLAYER: Senior, Imani Ballard leads the team in hits, runs, and slugging percentage even though she has played in less than half of the team’s games. She has recorded two doubles and a home run with a .700 on base percentage. Ballard was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week of 2/20.
