Softball Announces 2017 Schedule
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany softball team announced its 2017 spring competition schedule. The schedule consists of 50 games played over 39 competition dates, including four early-season tournaments, 12 double-headers, and 17 home games.
UAlbany will open its season with the Emu Madeira Beach Spring Invitational on February 24-26, where the team will play in six games against six different opponents. Next, the team will play in the North Florida Invitational from March 3-5, playing five games against four different teams.
Five days after the North Florida Invitational, UAlbany will travel to Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classico from March 10-12, playing five games against three teams. The final early-season tournament is the George Washington Buff & Blue Challenge from March 17-19, where the Great Danes will play five games, alternating opponents between host George Washington and Niagara.
UAlbany’s first home stand of the season is also its longest. After 24 consecutive games on the road, the Great Danes open their home schedule with 11 consecutive home games, including five double-headers. The first date on the home schedule is March 25 when the team will host a double-header with Central Connecticut. On March 29, the Danes will host a double-header against crosstown rival Siena.
April 1 and 2 represent the opening of America East competition for the Great Danes, when they host Stony Brook for a three-game set. The Seawolves finished fourth in the America East last season, and were eliminated by UAlbany in the conference tournament.
The long home stand concludes with double-headers against Bryant on April 4 and Cornell on April 5. The Danes then hit the road for their next five, starting with a three-game series at UMass Lowell April 8-9. UMass Lowell finished sixth in the America East last season, but could not compete in the conference tournament due to NCAA reclassifying rules.
A one-day double-header at 2016 regular season champion Binghamton rounds out the five-game road trip. UAlbany eliminated the Bearcats in the conference tournament last season.
The Great Danes return home for a three game series against UMBC on April 14-15. The Retrievers finished fifth in the America East last season. After a full week off, UAlbany will next visit Lehigh for a doubleheader on April 22.
The final home stand of the season begins on April 26 when the Great Danes will host one game against Binghamton, before hosting a three-game set against Hartford from April 29-30. Hartford finished seventh in the regular season last year but earned the sixth seed in the tournament due to UMass Lowell’s ineligibility.
The Great Danes’ 2017 regular season will end with five games on the road. First, the team will visit Syracuse for a double-header on May 2, followed by a three-game series at 2016 America East Champion Maine, who defeated UAlbany in the title game a season ago.
The 2017 America East tournament will be held from May 10-13 at the top overall seed from the regular season.
