UAlbany Women's Soccer Finishes Regular Season at SUNY Rival Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s soccer team will look to solidify a place in the America East Tournament, finishing the regular season with a Thursday, October 19th 7 p.m. game at Stony Brook.
The game will be broadcast online on AmericaEast.tv. For those looking to attend the game at LaValle Stadium on Long Island, tickets are $5 for all parties.
UAlbany is currently tied for fourth place in the America East with 10 points off a 3-3-1 conference record, winning two straight off a 4-1 home victory over Maine on Sunday to have a 5-10-1 overall record. Stony Brook is in third place in the conference with 12 points from a 4-2 league record, entering at 8-8 overall after a 6-1 home win over UMBC.
UAlbany earned a 4-0 victory over Stony Brook last season at home. The Seawolves lead the all-time series 11-6, including a 2-0 win on Long Island in 2015.
A win for UAlbany would guarantee a spot in the America East Tournament. UAlbany will await its fate on Sunday on the final day of the regular season with a tie or loss.
VEGA - TIED FOR FIRST ALL-TIME IN GOALS AT UALBANY: Vivian Vega, who scored the game-winning goal against Hartford for the 2016 America East title, stands with 23 goals in their career, tied for first all-time at UAlbany with Shayla Bergeron, who had 23 goals from 2010-12. She earned her 23rd goal on October 5th in the 1-1 draw vs. Hartford.
FRESHMAN UP!: UAlbany will be relying on two freshmen to split the time in goal this season. It will be the second year in a row that UAlbany will have its primary goalkeeper being a freshman. Through the season,
KOPP WITH THE ASSIST: Caroline Kopp stands tied for fourth in the America East with four this year, along with Miranda Badovinac. Kopp also has 12 assists in her career, placing her fifth all-time in UAlbany history, four away from Kiana Rugar’s top mark of 16. Kopp had six assists in 2016, the fourth-highest single season assists mark in program history.
MIGHTY MARIAH: Mariah Williams is UAlbany’s top goal scorer this season with seven, including UAlbany’s first three goals this season and a hat trick vs. Maine. Including the two goals vs. UConn last season, Williams had a streak of five goals in a row for UAlbany. The junior has 17 career goals at UAlbany, tied for fifth all-time with the program.
WILLIAMS EARNS AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK: After earning the team’s first hat trick since 2012, Mariah Williams was honored as the America East Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. It is her first-ever conference weekly award and the second for UAlbany this year, along with one from Vivian Vega.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: Stony Brook has two of the top-8 players in scoring in the America East: freshman forward Alyssa Francese has eight goals and an assist while classmate forward Rachel Florenz has six goals and an assist.
Another freshman protects the cage: Sofia Manner has a 0.89 goals allowed average and an 80.9% save rate.
