UAlbany Sports Information   08-18-2017

NORFOLK, Va. – The back-to-back America East champion UAlbany women’s soccer team is set for its 2017 season opener, heading south to Virginia to take on Old Dominion on Sunday, August 20th at 6 p.m.

The game will be broadcast online via CUSATV, available with a subscription fee.

UAlbany is set to enter a new era under first-year head coach Nick Bochette.  The Great Danes enter 2017 as the back-to-back America East champion, finishing last year at 11-8-1 overall and 6-1-1 in its league.  Old Dominion, playing its first game against George Mason on August 18th, was 7-12 last year with a 5-5 league record in Conference-USA.

This is the first-ever meeting between UAlbany and Old Dominion.   This is also the first-ever game for UAlbany in the state of Virginia.  UAlbany last played a Conference-USA opponent in 2013 with a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic while Old Dominion had a game against an America East opponent in 2012, a 3-2 defeat at Hartford.

THREE GREAT DANES NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS: Caroline Kopp, Savanah Courtney and Vivian Vega will serve as team captains for UAlbany women’s soccer for the 2017 season.

All three will be serving as captains for the first time this season under new head coach Nick Bochette. Vega, a senior, has started all three years while Kopp and Courtney, each juniors, have started each of the past two years on the back line.

VEGA - SECOND ALL-TIME IN GOALS AT UALBANY: Vivian Vega, who scored the game-winning goal against Hartford for the 2016 America East title, stands with 20 goals in their career, second all-time at UAlbany.  She is three goals away from tying for first in goals with Shayla Bergeron, who had 23 goals from 2010-12.

FRESHMAN UP!: UAlbany will be relying on two freshmen to split the time in goal this season. Sophia Chen from Colorado and Andrea Leitner from New Jersey will compete at goalkeeper.

It will be the second year in a row that UAlbany will have its primary goalkeeper being a freshman.

NICK BOCHETTE TAKES OVER AS UALBANY HEAD COACH: Former associate head coach Nick Bochette has been promoted to serve as head coach of the UAlbany women’s soccer team.

Bochette has been with the program the last four years, including the last two as the associate head coach and the previous two as the first assistant coach under Caitlin Cucchiella.  Together, they led UAlbany women’s soccer to its first two America East Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.

BOCHETTE’S COACHING STAFF: Returning to Bochette’s staff this season are assistant coach Ashley Grove for her second season and director of operations Mark Van Leuven.  Joining the staff this season: assistant coach Claire Scanlan, who spent three years in the same role at Oakland, and volunteer assistant Brian Gordon, a former Hartwick head coach.

THREE ALL-LEAGUE PLAYERS RETURN: UAlbany brings back three all-conference players from last season, led by First Team member Caroline Kopp, who also earned NSCAA All-Region honors for the second straight year.  Meghan Cavanaugh, the league’s Co-Rookie of the Year, and Vivian Vega, were each on the America East All-Conference Second Team.

TRAVELING DANES: UAlbany’s players come from eight different states and three different continents.  Among states represented include the home state of New York plus Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Texas, plus the team has players from Australia, Canada and Germany.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: Old Dominion returns its top two scorers from last year, led by C-USA Third Team junior forward Iris Achterhof, who had four goals and three assists last year.  Redshirt senior forward Madison Hogan was second in points off four goals and two assists.  The team’s starting goalkeeper, Krista Moisio, also returns, having a 1.51 goals allowed average and 66.7% save rate in 2016.
