Coach Bochette: “This was a gutsy, gritty, and dogged win on a wet and windy night to play. Our student-athletes really showed their character tonight after going down one early on in the game. I thought our response in the second half was absolutely incredible, and we created a deluge of chances throughout the period against a stubborn and resolute Vermont team. Most importantly, this game puts us in a great position going into the postseason. Earning a share of the regular-season America East Championship is a fantastic accomplishment itself, but it also gives us a quarterfinal bye and a home semifinal, which we’re extremely excited for. This is the best time of year, and we’re really enjoying ourselves at the moment.”
Trailing 1-0 deep into the second half, the University at Albany women’s soccer team rallied late to score two goals in the final four minutes of regulation to defeat Vermont on the road. The victory earns the Great Danes a share of the 2019 America East regular-season title with Stony Brook.
UAlbany will be the second overall seed in the 2019 America East Tournament. By virtue of finishing the season in the top two, the Great Danes will enjoy a bye into the semifinal round.
Vermont found the back of the net quickly, when Natalie Durieux scored in just the ninth minute off a setup from Ella Bankert. Despite letting up the goal, UAlbany asserted its offensive pressure in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Catamounts 12-4 and drawing six corner kicks to Vermont’s zero.
The second half went by with UAlbany continuing its pressure on the Catamounts defense to the tune of 15 more shots. As regulation continued to wind down, the Great Danes still trailed 1-0 as late as the 85th minute.
Sophia Eifler broke UAlbany’s scoreless run with her first goal of the season in the 86th minute to tie the game at one. In the 89th, Jasmine Colbert pushed UAlbany over the top with the game-winner to put the Danes up 2-1 for good. Freshman Leah Pais recorded assists on both UAlbany goals.
The regular-season title is UAlbany’s first since sharing the title in 2016 with Hartford, and just the team’s second overall. For Stony Brook, it is their second-straight year finishing with at least a share of the regular-season title.
Next: UAlbany will return to action on Thursday, November 7 in the America East semifinals. The Great Danes will face the winner of three-seed Hartford and six-seed UMass Lowell.
