Leading the Pack

  • Despite creating opportunities, the Great Danes recorded just two shots in the season opener against Oklahoma, one each from freshmen Sahara Zingano and Natasha Fowler-Varon
  • Due to injuries, UAlbany started three freshmen against Oklahoma
  • Junior goalkeeper Andrea Leitner recorded five saves in the season opener, including four in the second half
  • UAlbany won a program-record 14 games in 2018 and captured a third America East title in four years

Scouting Northeastern

  • Northeastern fell in overtime in their season opener 2-1 to Stony Brook
  • Northeastern went 10-9-1 in 2018, including 5-4-1 at home
  • The Huskies return 19 letter-winners from 2018, including Julianne Ross and Mikenna McManus, who were named to the Preseason All-CAA Team.

Last Meeting

UAlbany hosted Northeastern at Casey Stadium on September 13, 2018, with the Great Danes claiming a 3-1 victory.  It was UAlbany’s first victory in Division I program history over the Huskies, who had won each of the first seven meetings since 1999.  Mariah Williams scored two of UAlbany’s three goals with Jasmine Colbert netting the third.  Hannah Rosenblatt scored Northeastern’s goal, and both Williams and Rosenblatt have since graduated from their respective programs.

Delayed Start

The start of the season opener at Oklahoma was delayed by more than two hours due to lightning in the area.  Once the game finally commenced, the Great Danes and Sooners played a scoreless first half before Oklahoma broke through shortly after halftime to take a 1-0 lead which would prove to be the final score.

Preseason Predictions

UAlbany was picked first in the America East preseason coaches’ poll, collecting four first-place votes and 57 overall points.  The top five teams, UAlbany, Hartford, Stony Brook, UMass Lowell, and New Hampshire, were separated by only 17 points.

Returning Firepower

UAlbany returns four players who earned All-Conference recognition in 2018.  Meghan Cavanaugh was named First Team; Jada Colbert was named Rookie of the Year, Second Team, and All-Rookie; Gina Bracamonte was named Second Team; Jasmine Colbert was named All-Rookie.  Additionally, Cavanaugh and both Colbert sisters were named to the America East All-Tournament team.

Unexpected Reinforcements

Joining the incoming freshman class of nine student-athletes is junior Kendra Harbinger.  Harbinger is a member of the UAlbany women’s lacrosse team, and will pull double-duty with women’s soccer starting this season.  Harbinger previously played soccer at Shenendehowa High School.

Schedule Change

The 2019 season sees the America East schedule stretched out over an additional week, and the America East Tournament timeline condensed to include fewer days between the semifinals and finals.  The move was made to give teams more control over their midweek games and allow for more rest in between games.

Replacing Greatness

2018 marked the departure of program record-setters Mariah Williams and Caroline Kopp to graduation.  Williams set single-season and career program records in both points and goals, while Kopp set single-season and career records in assists.

  • Northeastern finished second in the CAA last season and fell to Hofstra in the CAA semifinals
  • Northeastern’s Julianne Ross was named CAA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in the award’s inaugural season

UAlbany visits Army West Point on Thursday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m.
