Women's Soccer Names 2019 Captains
ALBANY, N.Y. – Ahead of the 2019 season opener, the University at Albany women’s soccer program has announced three captains for the upcoming season. Senior Kimberly Dieroff, and juniors Andrea Leitner and Hailey Summers will take up the formal leadership roles for the Great Danes this year.
“Any and all successful programs have a culture of strong leadership from within,” said head coach Nick Bochette. “We’ve always believed that strong student-athlete leaders are the foundation of our culture, and these three young women embody all the qualities we value as a program. I look forward to working with them and the rest of our team as we tackle the challenges of the 2019 season.”
Dieroff, defender/midfielder from Homer, N.Y., will serve as team captain for her second-straight season. She appeared in 21 games and made 18 starts in 2018, and will play in her 50th game for UAlbany in her first appearance this season. She scored one goal and recorded three assists last season.
“With preseason just starting, I’m extremely excited to return as captain for this season,” said Dieroff. “We have so many different personalities and so much new and returning talent that I think we’re going to be able to grow our program in a positive way while reaching new heights together.”
Leitner, a goalkeeper from Scotch Plains, N.J., has started all 37 games in which she appeared in her career, including 22 last season. She recorded seven shutouts in 2018, allowing 1.30 goals per game with a .701 save percentage while winning 14 games.
“I am honored and ecstatic to be named one of the captains for the 2019 season,” said Leitner. “I’m excited to build on the atmosphere we’ve created and continue to push ourselves to our fullest potential.”
Summers, a defender from Hamilton, Ontario, appeared in all 23 games for UAlbany in 2018, making 22 starts. A former America East All-Rookie, Summers has started 39 of 40 career games, locking down UAlbany’s back line.
“I’m extremely excited and honored to be named as one of the captains this year,” said Summers. “We have a really great group who have already proven their perseverance and dedication. As a team, we are all really looking forward to the season as we continue to work hard and push ourselves every day.”
The Great Danes open the 2019 season on August 22 at Oklahoma, and will play in their home opener on September 1 against Central Connecticut State.
