Coach Bochette: “We’re ecstatic to get a hard-fought and gritty 1-0 win today against a top conference rival.  Hartford has set the standard in our conference for most of the season, and we have a lot of respect for their team and coaches.  It was a difficult game and we had to make some compromises to our normal style to get a result, but I’m really proud of the adaptability, grit, and quality of our group.  We found ways to be dangerous and had such a positive mentality throughout the second half.  If we continue to take this kind of pride in our defending and continue to be hungry and create chances, I love our chances moving forward.”

Recap

The University at Albany women’s soccer team upset two-seed Hartford on the road on Sunday in the semifinal round of the America East Tournament.  The Great Danes will advance to the title game where they will host four-seed UMass Lowell next weekend.

The victory avenges the 2-1 defeat the Great Danes suffered at the hands of the Hawks earlier this month when UAlbany held Hartford to just two shots on goal, but was unable to capitalize on their own chances.

This time around, UAlbany and Hartford played a scoreless first half.  The Danes created their first scoring opportunity early, when Caroline Kopp found Mariah Williams on a corner kick in the seventh minute, only for Williams’ shot attempt to be blocked by the Hartford defense.

In the 15th minute, another Kopp corner kick found Gina Bracamonte, whose shot was saved.  The Hawks took their first shot of the game in the 25th minute, but Sierra Stone’s attempt trailed off wide of the net.  The Danes took two-more on-target attempts as the half wound down, but both were saved before crossing the line.

Hartford came out firing in the second half, taking their first shot just three minutes after the break.  UAlbany responded quickly with a shot of their own that was blocked, leading to yet another corner kick for Kopp.

In the 56th minute, Andrea Leitner made a one-handed save off a Hartford corner kick, preventing the Hawks from breaking the scoreless tie.

It wasn’t until the 79th minute when UAlbany broke through.  Jasmine Colbert ripped a shot at the Hartford goalkeeper Maia Perez.  Off the rebound, Williams was in position to hit the ball into the empty net from three yards out for her 17th goal of the season

Williams has now scored a goal in five of her last six games.

Hartford took just one more shot for the remainder of the game, in the 90th minute for a save by Leitner.  For the full game, Hartford held a narrow advantage in shots, 10-7, but did outshoot the Danes 8-4 in the second half.

Next: UAlbany will host UMass Lowell in the America East title game next weekend.  The Riverhawks defeated UAlbany 2-1 in Lowell earlier this season.
