BOSTON – Following a week-long three-goal performance, University at Albany redshirt-sophomore Meghan Cavanaugh has been named America East women’s soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the conference offices announced Monday. She was named alongside defensive player Mia Neas from New Hampshire and rookie Emily Nelson from UMass Lowell.
Cavanaugh, a midfielder from Clifton Park, N.Y., scored the game-winner in both of UAlbany’s matches last week, first against Vermont and later at Maine. She powered a Great Dane offense that scored four goals in two consecutive games to lock down the team’s first two America East victories of the season.
Against Vermont, Cavanaugh put UAlbany up 2-0 off a rip from 12 yards out shortly after halftime. In the next game, against Maine, she scored twice in four minutes. First, in the 62nd minute, she tipped in a serve from a free kick, and in the 66th, she ripped a shot from 15 yards out. On both goals against Maine, she was set up by Caroline Kopp.
UAlbany returns to action on Thursday, October 11 at America East leader Hartford.
