UAlbany Sports Information   10-25-2017

BOSTON – Caroline Kopp was selected as the America East Women’s Soccer Defender of the Year as the league’s yearly awards were announced on Wednesday.

Kopp is the first-ever UAlbany player to be named Defender of the Year.  She is also the first Great Dane to earn an America East Women’s Soccer major award outside of Rookie of the Year.

UAlbany had three all-conference players, including Kopp and Gina Bracamonte on the First Team and Mariah Williams on the Second Team.  In addition, Hailey Summers made the All-Rookie Team while Kopp and Savanah Courtney earned a place on the All-Academic Team.

Kopp is just the second UAlbany player to earn America East All-Conference First Team twice, along with alum Alexa Schneider. The junior has started all 17 games for UAlbany, serving as an outside back for the Great Danes as well as taking corner kicks.  She stands tied for fifth in the America East with four assists, adding a game-winning goal at Stony Brook.  In the classroom, she stands with a 3.43 GPA in biology.

Bracamonte earns her first all-conference yearly honor.  The sophomore midfielder started all 17 games, standing with three goals, including two game-winners against UMBC and Vermont in America East play.

Williams also notched her first all-conference selection.  The junior forward led UAlbany with seven goals, tied for fifth in the America East, in 14 games played, including a hat trick vs. Maine and a Player of the Week honor.

Summers joins the All-Rookie team after being a fixture on the UAlbany back line.  The freshman started 16 games as a center back, recording an assist in the victory at UMBC.

Courtney started 14 games at center back for UAlbany, serving as a team captain for the defense.  She is on the All-Academic Team with a 3.86 GPA in Public Affairs.

The all-conference teams were released by the America East Conference on Wednesday and were voted on by the league’s head coaches.

In the other major awards, Kayla Saager of Binghamton is Striker of the Year, Sierra Stone of Hartford is Midfielder of the Year, Mia Neas of New Hampshire is Goalkeeper of the Year and Sofia Manner of Stony Brook is Rookie of the Year.  Coaching Staff of the Year is shared by Binghamton and New Hampshire.

UAlbany is set for the America East Tournament quarterfinal round on Thursday, October 26th at 7 p.m., hosting Vermont at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
