ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s soccer team continues its homestand at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium this week, hosting a pair of opponents: vs. Dartmouth on Thursday, September 7th at 7 p.m. and vs. Colgate on Sunday, September 10th at 3 p.m.
All women’s soccer games at Casey Stadium are free to attend for the public. In addition, both games will be aired online on AmericaEast.tv. free of charge.
UAlbany and Dartmouth will play for the fourth consecutive season and fifth time overall. Dartmouth won 3-1 in Hanover last season and leads the overall series 3-0-1. UAlbany and Colgate meet for the third time overall and first time since 2015. The Raiders won 2-0 in Hamilton two years ago to go to 2-0 in the series.
UAlbany won its first two games last week, including 2-1 vs. Siena in the home opener on Sunday to improve to 2-3 overall. Dartmouth fell in a pair of games in California, last a 3-0 defeat at Pepperdine, to stand at 2-2 overall. Colgate, which will play Syracuse on Thursday, is coming off a 6-2 road defeat at Mississippi State to have a 1-4 overall record.
MIGHTY MARIAH: Mariah Williams is off to a strong beginning as a starter at forward, scoring UAlbany’s first three goals this season, including 2-2 on penalty kicks. Including the two goals vs. UConn last season, Williams netted five goals in a row for UAlbany. The junior has 13 career goals at UAlbany.
VEGA - SECOND ALL-TIME IN GOALS AT UALBANY: Vivian Vega, who scored the game-winning goal against Hartford for the 2016 America East title,stands with 20 goals in their career, second all-time at UAlbany. She is three goals away from tying for first in goals with Shayla Bergeron, who had 23 goals from 2010-12.
FRESHMAN UP!: UAlbany will be relying on two freshmen to split the time in goal this season. Sophia Chen from Colorado and Andrea Leitner from New Jersey will compete at goalkeeper.
It will be the second year in a row that UAlbany will have its primary goalkeeper being a freshman.
THREE ALL-LEAGUE PLAYERS RETURN: UAlbany brings back three all-conference players from last season, led by First Team member Caroline Kopp, who also earned NSCAA All-Region honors for the second straight year. Meghan Cavanaugh, the league’s Co-Rookie of the Year, and Vivian Vega, were each on the America East All-Conference Second Team.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: 2016 First Team All-Ivy junior forward Remy Borinsky has a goal for Dartmouth while senior Bianca Ribi has a goal and an assist. Freshman Mariel Gordon is in goal with a 77.3% save rate and 1.27 goals allowed average.
Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year Abby Sotomayor leads Colgate with two goals. Sophomore Kelly Chiavaro is the primary player in goal with a 4.10 goals allowed average and a 48.4% save rate.
