Women's Basketball Hosts Hartford
ALBANY, N.Y. – After starting the conference schedule 8-1, the University at Albany women’s basketball team has dropped two of its last three, and will look to right the ship on Sunday when team hosts Hartford.
UAlbany last visited Vermont, losing to the Catamounts 62-57. The Great Danes fell behind early and faced a 16-point deficit at halftime, their third-largest of the season. Entering the fourth quarter, the Danes trailed by 15.
The fourth quarter started with a signifant increase in offensive and defensive pressure for UAlbany, whose press defense sparked a 6-0 run to start the quarter and a comeback attempt that saw the Danes cut Vermont’s lead to just two. The rally effort fell just short, however, and Vermont escaped with a five-point victory.
Hartford has lost its last two straight games, at home against Stony Brook and on the road at Maine. Since defeating UAlbany in the conference opener, Hartford has gone 5-5 against conference opponents.
UAlbany has fallen to second place in the conference standings, one game behind America East leader Maine. The Great Danes hold a three-game advantage over the Black Bears in overall record, as well as the head-to-head tiebreaker with one meeting between the teams remaining. Hartford is currently fourth in the standings, one game in the loss column behind third place Binghamton, and one game ahead of New Hampshire and Stony Brook.
The Great Danes are hosting a kids clinic following Sunday’s game to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, the clinic will feature representatives from UAlbany women’s teams where attendees will learn about soccer, golf, field hockey, basketball, volleyball, and more.
To register your child for the clinic, please sign up by clicking here: https://acsedwc.ejoinme.org/ualbanyclinic. 100% of the $5 registration fee will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society.
Funds raised will help the Society fund lifesaving cancer research, provide free programs and services to Capital Region residents, access to 24/7 information and support through 1.800.227.2345 and cancer.org, and lodging assistance through the Hope Lodge© program.
Following the Hartford game, UAlbany will host one final regular-season home game at SEFCU Arena on Saturday, February 17 against UMBC. The game will feature a short ceremony recognizing the three seniors on the 2017-18 roster.
