BOSTON – The University at Albany women’s basketball team has been selected second in the America East Preseason Coaches Poll, the conference offices announced Thursday. The Great Danes had been selected first in the poll each of the last five seasons.
The preseason coaches’ poll is voted on by the league’s nine head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own team. UAlbany received one of a possible eight first place votes, accumulating 53 points total.
New Hampshire, the 2016-17 regular season champion, was unanimously selected to finish first, tallying the remaining eight first-place votes for a total of 64 points. Binghamton, Hartford, and UMBC were selected third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Only two points separated UAlbany and Binghamton.
The Great Danes met Maine in last year’s America East title game for the second consecutive season. UAlbany won its unprecedented sixth consecutive America East championship after defeating the Black Bears 66-50. Overall, UAlbany finished 2016-17 with a 21-12 record after falling to #1 Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Great Danes return nine players from last year’s squad, including All-Conference Second Team selection Jessica Féquière, who was just named to the preseason All-Conference team, and All-Tournament selection Mackenzie Trpcic.
