Women's Basketball Announces Non-Conference Schedule

UAlbany Sports Information   08-14-2018

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s basketball program has released its non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

“Our staff is very excited to announce our non-conference line-up,” said head coach Colleen Mullen. “We will face a variety of challenging opponents which should prepare us well before we head into a very strong America East conference.

“The schedule includes six in-state opponents as well as nationally recognized programs, South Florida, Purdue and Rutgers,” Mullen continued. “This year's squad will be relatively young and inexperienced, but has been part of a tremendous amount of success. These games should give us a great idea of who and where we are as we head into conference play.”

The Great Danes will play 13 games before America East play begins, including trips to South Florida, Purdue, and Rutgers. Six of the Danes’ 13 opponents hail from New York, and four games feature rematches with opponents from last season.

Last season, UAlbany finished second in the America East during the regular season for the second straight year. The Danes fell in the America East Tournament semifinals against Hartford, but still earned their seventh-consecutive postseason bid, drawing the University of Pennsylvania in the first round of the WNIT.

UAlbany opens the season at the University of South Florida on Friday, November 9. The Bulls went 26-8 last year before falling to UConn in the AAC Tournament Final, and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The Danes will play a second straight game on the road, at Cornell on Monday, November 12, before hosting the 2018-19 home opener against Manhattan. Next, UAlbany will play at Rutgers on Sunday, November 18. The Scarlet Knights did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament a season ago and declined an invitation to the WNIT. Rutgers head coach, C. Vivian Stringer, currently has 997 career victories.

Shortly after playing Rutgers, the Danes will return to New Jersey to play Monmouth, which will precede two straight home games, against Holy Cross on Sunday, November 25 and against Canisius on Wednesday, November 28.

December begins with a trip to Lafayette ahead of the final two non-conference home games of the season. On Wednesday, December 5, the Danes will host Central Connecticut State, before wrapping home games for the year on Saturday, December 8 against Marist.

UAlbany will end the non-conference schedule with three final games on the road. First, the team will visit St. Francis, Brooklyn on Saturday, December 14 before heading west to visit Purdue on Wednesday, December 19, which will be the final game before the holiday break. The Boilermakers won two games in the WNIT last season before being eliminated by Indiana in the Round of 16.

Following the holiday break, UAlbany will play one final game before the New Year, at Columbia on Saturday, December 29, before America East play begins on January 2.
