Coach Mullen Finalizes Women's Basketball Staff
ALBANY, N.Y. - University at Albany women’s basketball head coach Colleen Mullen has announced two new additions to her staff. Catherine Cassidy and Jackie Alexander will join the Great Danes for the upcoming season.
Cassidy will join the coaching staff as the third assistant, following the arrivals of Yvonne Hawkins from Boston College and Megan Methven from Army West Point. Cassidy spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Stonehill College, overseeing five NE-10 All-Conference selections and helping Stonehill reach the Elight Eight in 2018. She previously was the assistant women’s basketball coach at Kingsborough Community College from 2013-15. Cassidy graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2013 with a degree in Fitness & Wellness Leadership with a minor in Business and Marketing. She played basketball for Plattsburgh for four years, serving as team captain for three.
“I'm thrilled to have Catherine Cassidy on board with us here at UAlbany,” said Mullen. “Catherine is full of energy and is a proven winner. As an assistant coach at the D-II powerhouse Stonehill College, she learned what it takes to attain and sustain success at the national level. I'm confident these qualities will contribute greatly to our Great Dane championship mindset.”
Alexander will serve as the new Director of Operations, replacing Liz Tapler, who spent the last three seasons in the position. Most recently, Alexander spent one year as the women’s basketball video coordinator at the United States Air Force Academy. Previously, she was an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Northwest High School in Clarksville, Tennessee. Before that, she served in the United States Army at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and in Iraq. Alexander graduated from the University of the Cumberlands in 2014 with a degree in Biology with minors in Spanish and Military Science after spending a year at the Army West Point in 2010. She was a three-year letter-winner on the women’s basketball team at Cumberland, where she was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the United States Army upon her graduation.
“I'm excited to announce the addition of Jackie Alexander to our staff as Director of Basketball Operations,” said Mullen. “After serving in Baghdad, Iraq as an Army officer, it's an honor to have Jackie join the Great Dane family. Her experience as both a Captain in the Army and as a decorated collegiate player will provide a terrific example of leadership and humble sacrifice to our players, staff, and department. We are so lucky to have Jackie representing this great institution.”
Last season, the Great Danes went 24-8 overall and earned a seventh-consecutive postseason berth.
