Short Story: The UAlbany women’s basketball team fell to Hartford Sunday in the America East semifinals 58-56, ending the Great Danes’ run of six consecutive America East titles.

Coach Mac: “Hartford’s press is good, and we didn’t necessarily handle it the best at times.  I thought in the first half we handled it great, but they forced us into too many turnovers for a game like that.  They played well and kept their momentum going and I think we just fell short at the end.”

One day after beating Vermont in the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive season, the University at Albany women’s basketball team played Hartford in the semifinals in a rematch of last year’s semifinal game.  Sunday, UAlbany fell in the final seconds to the Hawks, 58-56, ending their quest for a seventh-straight America East title.

In last year’s semifinal meeting between these teams, UAlbany defeated Hartford 67-65.  The Hawks, who missed a three at the buzzer that would have won the game, gave the Great Danes their toughest test of their three games in last year’s America East tournament.  UAlbany split the regular season series with the Hawks this year, with each team winning by double-digits on their home floors.

Hartford scored the first points of the game, taking a 2-0 lead before Jessica Féquière hit a three to put UAlbany up one.  Hartford went up 4-3 briefly before UAlbany went on a 6-0 run to lead 9-4.  The Hawks scored nine of the next 11 points, coming within one mid-way through the first.

After seeing their lead shrink, UAlbany extended their advantage back to six with 3:09 remaining, and took a four-point lead into the start of the second quarter.

Chyanna Canada, coming off a career performance against Vermont, put UAlbany up 25-19 early in the second quarter.  Hartford cut the lead back to one with 4:18 left in the half.  Unable to get over the hump, the Hawks’ defense let Mackenzie Trpcic hit a wild layup at the end of the half, putting UAlbany up 35-32 after the first 20 minutes.

Hartford took its first lead since early in the first quarter with 8:31 left in the third, scoring six straight points to open the second half.  The Hawks opened up a five-point lead and led by as many as six until UAlbany scored 11 of the final 14 points of the quarter, capped off by a deep three from Trpcic that put UAlbany up 48-45 entering the fourth.

Hartford scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, taking a brief one-point lead before CeCe Mayo scored a layup on an inbounds play that sparked a UAlbany run.  With just over four minutes remaining, UAlbany led 56-49.

Hartford cut the lead to three with just under two minutes left.  The Hawks cut the lead to one, drawing a foul on the layup, but missed the ensuing free throw.

Hartford took the lead after forcing a turnover on an inbounds play after a UAlbany timeout.  UAlbany drew a foul with 38.1 left trailing 57-56.  The Hawks made one of two free throws with 4.5 left to take a 58-56 lead.

UAlbany advanced the ball with its second-to-last timeout.  Hartford gave its last foul with 2.9 left.  UAlbany used its last timeout.  Hartford challenged the inbounds pass on the receiving end, knocking the pass out of bounds with 1.0 remaining.  The inbounds pass was off-target, and Hartford won 58-56.

Trpcic led UAlbany with 16 points and seven assists.  Tiana-Jo Carter and Féquière also scored in double-digits, with Carter just missing another double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Next: UAlbany will await its postseason fate following the women’s NCAA selection show on Monday, March 12, which will not feature the Great Danes for the first time in seven years.  The America East final between Maine and Hartford will be played in Bangor, Maine on Friday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m.
