ALBANY, N.Y. – Former University at Albany shooting guard Imani Tate will play on the U.S. Virgin Islands national team this summer, starting with the Women's Centrobasket Championship on July 12.
Tate, who graduated UAlbany as the second-highest scorer in program history, joins the Virgin Islands roster as the team prepares to host the Centrobasket Championship in St. Thomas, which runs from July 12 through July 16. The other participating teams in the tournament are Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and Jamaica.
The Virgin Islands will open on July 12 against Guatemala, and then play Mexico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico over the next four consecutive days. Each of the Virgin Islands' games will be played at 8:00 p.m. The top three teams in the tournament will advance to the FIBA Americas Tournament, starting on August 6 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Puerto Rico holds the highest FIBA world ranking among the six participants at 22. Jamaica and Mexico are closely ranked, at 33 and 35, respectively. Finally, Tate's Virgin Islands team is ranked 50.
