Haskell Jr. Commissioner's Cup for the fifth consecutive athletic season and the sixth time in history. The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East as determined by a scoring system that rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference's 17 sports. UAlbany had a powerful year in America East play in the 2016-17 season, earning a league record nine America East Tournament titles: men's soccer, women's soccer, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, women's basketball, men's outdoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's lacrosse and softball. In addition, field hockey, women's soccer and men's lacrosse all had America East regular season titles. "This has been a historic year for the Great Danes, winning our fifth consecutive America East Commissioner's Cup with nine championships is a tremendous achievement,” said UAlbany director of athletics Mark Benson. "To win it in a year where we celebrated our 100th Division I Championship makes it even more special as we can thank and recognize not only our current student-athletes but the thousands of student-athletes, coaches and staff over the last 15 years who have helped build a winning tradition at UAlbany." The cup was awarded at the America East annual awards dinner in Savannah, Georgia. UAlbany has been awarded the Commissioner's Cup each of the past five seasons dating back to the 2012-13 year, winning its first in the 2004-05 season. “We want to thank our university leadership and community for providing the support necessary to field a broad-based program that achieves both athletic and academic success,” said Benson. “Over 450 student-athletes at UAlbany, in addition to the success in competition, maintain over a 3.0 GPA. UAlbany had 439 points, just four shy of the league record of 443 by UAlbany last year and Delaware in 1995-96. Women's basketball was the biggest contributor of points with 48, while women's soccer had 46. In second place was Stony Brook with 311 points, followed by New Hampshire in third with 300. UMBC (251), Binghamton (240), UMass Lowell (211), Vermont (185), Maine (179) and Hartford (156). 2016-17 UAlbany Highlights – America East CompetitionFall (167 points):--America East Tournament titles: men's soccer, women's soccer--America East Regular Season titles: women's soccer, field hockey (East Division)--Women's soccer led all fall America East teams with 46 points off a combined regular season and tournament title.--Men's soccer picked up 40 points with its first America East Tournament title and finishing second in the regular season.--Field hockey had 31 points with an America East regular season title while volleyball had 30 with an America East Tournament title match appearance.--Men's cross country contributed 14 points while women's cross country had eight. Winter (124 points):--America East Tournament titles: men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, women's basketball--Women's basketball earned 48 points, the highest of any UAlbany team and second among all America East teams, with its tournament title, the sixth in a row for the squad, and a second place finish in the regular season.--Men's basketball tallied 40 points off a tournament title game appearance and a third place finish in the regular season.--Men's and women's indoor track & field each earned a maximum 18 points for their America East Tournament titles. Spring (148 points):--America East Tournament titles: men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, men's lacrosse, softball--America East Regular Season title: men's lacrosse--Men's lacrosse notched a maximum 36 points for the America East outright regular season and tournament titles. The team for the most points for any America East spring season program.--Men's and women's outdoor track & field both had a maximum 18 points for their America East Tournament titles.--Women's lacrosse ended with 30 points with a tournament title game appearance and second place regular season finish.--Softball's run to an America East Tournament title gave the Great Danes 24 points after a fifth-place regular season finish.--Baseball contributed 22 points finishing third in the America East Tournament and fourth in the regular season.
