Recap: The UAlbany men’s basketball team had a nine-point halftime lead but fell on a comeback by UMBC in a 68-60 defeat in Baltimore.

Early in the game, UAlbany looked for layups in close while UMBC went for the mid-range jumpers.  With Joe Sherburne hitting two jumpers quickly, UMBC had an early four-point lead, countered by Joe Cremo hitting a layup and two free throws off a fast break foul to tie the game at 6-6.

After a couple of exchanges, Cremo knocked down a trio of three-pointers in a row to surge UAlbany into the lead.  A layup by Greig Stire and a three off a screen from Costa Anderson completed a 14-1 UAlbany run as the Great Danes led 24-13 midway through the 1st.

UMBC hit a couple threes of its own to chip away, pulling to within five after a wing three from Sherburne.  Cremo knocked down a fourth three-pointer, adding a putback from Devonte Campbell and a Travis Charles jumper as UAlbany rebuilt its lead to 12 at 35-23 with 3:00 to go in the 1st.  A late three by UMBC made it 37-28 UAlbany at the half.

Into the second half, David Nichols found his mark from three-point range a couple of times, with the second pushing UAlbany up 45-33 in the first two minutes of the period.

Jairus Lyles, limited in the first half due to foul trouble, spurred on the UMBC’s offense with the team’s next four baskets, all within 10 feet of the basket.  UMBC was within six at 49-43 with 10:56 to play.

Charles hit a jumper from 10 feet out along the baseline to get UAlbany back up by seven.  UMBC countered with the full court press, as Brandon Horvath hit a three to start a run, and K.J. Maura hit two free throws and a three to send the home team ahead 54-53 with 6:32 to go.

Back and forth the lead went as the sides exchanged free throws.  Stire got fouled on the final media timeout and hit two free throws to put UAlbany up by one.  UMBC scored on its next three possessions, the first two by Lyles to lead by five.  Cremo hit a three while fouled to pull UAlbany within two at 62-60 with 1:16 left.

UMBC sealed the game, holding UAlbany without points the rest of the way and hitting free throws with Lyles and Maura.  UMBC took the win 68-60.

UAlbany comes back home for its final two America East regular season games, playing Maine on Saturday, February 24th at 7 p.m. at the SEFCU Arena.
