UAlbany Men's Basketball Stifles Stony Brook with Second Half Comeback

Short Story: Down as much as 12 in the first period, the UAlbany men’s basketball team outscored Stony Brook 31-18 in the second half, including 14 points from David Nichols, to grab a 57-50 conference road victory.

Key Stats:

  • UAlbany: David Nichols notched 14 points, 14 of UAlbany’s 31 second half points, plus six rebounds and three assists. Travis Charles went 8-for-9 from the free throw line for 14 points and seven rebounds while Joe Cremo earned 14 points and four boards.  Greig Stire was close to a double-double off nine points and 10 rebounds, going 4-for-5 from the field.
  • Stony Brook: Tyrell Sturdivant had team-highs of 12 points and eight rebounds. No other Seawolf had double digit points.
  • UAlbany outrebounded Stony Brook 41-32 in the game and held Stony Brook without a field goal in the final 3:21.
  • In the final 3:21 of each half combined, UAlbany outscored Stony Brook 15-1; 7-1 in the first half and 8-0 in the second.

Key Situations:

  • 17:14-9:45 1st half: Using primarily perimeter shots and fast breaks, Stony Brook had a 17-5 run to take a 19-9 lead.
  • 3:26-0:00 1st half: UAlbany finished the first half on a 7-1 run, capped by a Joe Cremo three with four seconds left, to make it 32-26 Stony Brook at the period’s end.
  • 15:28-14:20 2nd half: A putback by Alex Foster followed by consecutive three-point field goals by David Nichols completes an 8-0 run and sends UAlbany ahead 39-36.

Recap: The UAlbany men’s basketball team came back from down 12 in the second half, holding Stony Brook to 18 second-half points en route to a 57-50 road victory on Long Island.

Early on offensively, UAlbany looked for layups while Stony Brook went for outside shots.  UAlbany took an early lead with paint baskets from Travis Charles and Greig Stire, which SBU countered with a couple of threes early in possessions.  SBU added two more scores for a 10-0 run to lead 12-4 five-and-a-half minutes in.

SBU’s defense held UAlbany to five field goals in the first three media timeouts, building its own lead to 22-11 off an Andrew Garcia three with 8:19 left in the 1st.

UAlbany used the free throw line to try to chip away, with Charles converting four attempts at the line to pull the Great Danes within seven.  SBU got a couple of putback baskets to go ahead by 12 with under four left in the 1st.

UAlbany’s man-to-man defense forced pressure and made some blocks, holding Stony Brook to one point in the final 3:26 of the half.  More Charles free throws and a Joe Cremo three with six seconds left pulled UAlbany to within six at the half, 32-26 Stony Brook.

The defense continued to keep Stony Brook from getting back-to-back scores.  After Akwasi Yeboah scored a jumper, UAlbany pulled to with one possession after a putback from Alex Foster.  Then, David Nichols knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to send UAlbany ahead 39-36 with 14:20 left in the 2nd.

Nichols continued his strong shooting relying on mid-range jumpers, keeping UAlbany ahead.  A jumper and a pair of free throws to make it 45-40 midway through the second. 

Tyrell Sturdivant scored a jumper, then neither team got points in the next 4:10.  UAlbany broke its drought a Charles hit a 12-footer to send the Great Danes up 47-42 with 5:44 left in play.

Going back to the perimeter, Stony Brook reclaimed the lead with a pair of three-pointers.  UAlbany attacked back with Stire in the paint as the lead went back and forth, with SBU being up 50-49 with 3:21 to play. 

Cremo found Stire under the basket for a layup to push UAlbany ahead in the next possession.  UAlbany held on defense, then Charles got two free throw makes for a three-point lead with 2:07 left.

SBU went back to attacking quickly, missing two shots.  Devonte Campbell stole an inbounds pass with 1:18, then another exchange of missed shots.  Nichols pulled down a rebound on a missed three and was fouled, hitting two free throws.  Another SBU missed three and a Stire rebound turned into a Cremo layup to seal the game.  UAlbany took the victory 57-50.
