Recap: The UAlbany men’s basketball team held down the America East’s top scoring team, dominating UMBC 83-39 for its second straight conference victory.

Focusing on possessions under the basket, UAlbany used a 6-0 run, started by two Travis Charles field goals, to take an early 8-2 lead on UMBC, holding the Retrievers to one field goal in the opening 4:30.

UAlbany’s defense and rebounding continued to hold off UMBC’s offense, with the Great Danes continuing to go into the paint.  After layups from Greig Stire, Charles and Alex Foster in succession, Ahmad Clark hit a pair of threes, the first off a steal and score, to take a 20-6 advantage with seven minutes left in the period.

After a couple of back and forth baskets, UAlbany’s outside shooting helped fuel a 10-0 run, including two threes from David Nichols, for a 24-point advantage.  Holding UMBC to its season-low in points for a half, UAlbany led 36-12 at the break.

To begin the second half, UAlbany’s strong shooting reigned, with Nichols and Charles each hitting their first two shots.  Charles added a free throw then Devonte Campbell netted a layup off the glass to complete a 13-0 run, increasing the lead to 37 at 49-12.  Later, two more baskets for UAlbany made it 53-14 Great Danes with 15:39 left in the 2nd.

With Jairus Lyles starting to hit shots, UMBC scored 11 points in a row, pulling to within 26 later after two more Lyles baskets to make the score 57-31 UAlbany with 8:31 to play.

UAlbany got back the defensive pressure and held UMBC to only one field goal for over four minutes.  Clark and Foster led the UAlbany scoring with free throws, also having a Costa Anderson corner three for a 40-point lead with under four minute left.

Matt Conway added a layup, then a corner three as UAlbany finished out the game allowing just one basket in the final 3:55.  Nick Fruscio scored UAlbany’s final field goal with an attack in the paint for the layup as the Great Danes took the win 83-39.

UAlbany will prepare for a rematch of the 2017 America East title game, heading to Vermont on Wednesday, January 24th for a 7 p.m. contest.
