UAlbany Men's Basketball Kicks Off Gotham Classic vs. Bryant

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany men’s basketball team will begin the first of four Gotham Classic games, hosting Bryant at the SEFCU Arena on Wednesday, December 6th at 7 p.m.

The game will be broadcast online on AE on ESPN3, with Rodger Wyland on the call.  Brian Mariano will have the radio call on 104.5 the Team.

This is UAlbany’s home game for the round-robin event.  UAlbany will also play Siena, Memphis and Louisville in the Gotham Classic.

America East representative UAlbany has won its last two games, coming off an 86-82 win vs. Columbia on Saturday, to stand at 8-1 overall.  Bryant, from the Northeast Conference, is trying to snap a three-game losing streak, falling at UNH 75-59 on Saturday for a 1-7 record.

UAlbany and Bryant have met twice before, each coming in 2008.  UAlbany won both contests, including a 57-47 win on December 1st at home and a 76-67 victory on November 19th in Rhode Island.

This is UAlbany’s lone game against a Northeast Conference opponent this season.  Bryant is 1-1 against the America East, including a 78-73 victory vs. Hartford.

UALBANY TO COMPETE IN GOTHAM CLASSIC: UAlbany will be competing in the in-season round robin tournament Gotham Classic, composing of four games at campus sites. 

UAlbany will host Bryant on December 6th to begin the tournament, followed by the Albany Cup vs. Siena on December 9th at the Times Union Center.  UAlbany then has games at Memphis on December 12th and at Louisville on December 20th.

The tournament is headlined by a contest between Memphis and Louisville on December 16th at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  The Gotham Classic has been played since 2012, with UAlbany making its first appearance. 

NICHOLS NAMED TO LOU HENSON AWARD WATCH LIST: UAlbany junior guard David Nichols has been named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List.  The Lou Henson Award is given each year to the top Division I mid-major player. 

BOX OUT!: Through nine games, UAlbany has outrebounded its opponents in all contests, standing with the best rebounding margin in the America East at +10.9.  Second in the league is New Hampshire at +5.1.  Greig Stire (6.8) and Travis Charles (6.2) stand in the top-10 in the America East in rebounding.

THE WALKING BUCKET: Nicknamed the “Walking Bucket” by head coach Will Brown after the win over Colgate, Travis Charles has earned double digit points in all nine games this season for UAlbany, averaging 15.4 points per contest and shooting 65.4% from the field.  He is also averaging 6.2 boards a contest.

TOP SHOOTING TEAM IN THE AMERICA EAST: Through nine games in the season, UAlbany stands with the second highest scoring offense in the America East, earning 82.4 points per game, including five 80+ point games, with a conference best 49.3% field goal rate. 

Currently, Joe Cremo (17.7 ppg), David Nichols (17.2 ppg) and Travis Charles (15.4 ppg) are all in the top-10 in the America East in scoring.

FIRST 6-0 START IN DIVISION I, SINCE 1985-86: This season, UAlbany earned its first-ever 6-0 start in its Division I history, the first three wins against opponents picked to finish top three in their respective leagues in the preseason: Iona, Boston University and Yale. 

The last 6-0 start for UAlbany came in the DII era in 1985-86 and has only been achieved in two seasons since the 1956-57 year.

BASKETBALL IN ONE HAND, DEGREE IN THE OTHER: Two UAlbany players have earned their undergraduate degree and suit up as graduate students this year.  Travis Charles graduated from UAlbany in 2017 with a B.A. in African Studies, while Alex Foster graduated from Bradley in 2017 with a degree in sports communication.

SCOUTING BRYANT: Bryant was picked to finish eighth in the Northeast Conference this season.  An NEC All-Rookie Team member last year, guard Adam Grant is the team’s leading scorer, earning 17 points per game.  Classmate Ikenna Ndugba runs the point with 13.1 points and 4.5 assists a game while fellow sophomore Sabastian Townes is the primary down low with 11.5 points and 5.3 rebounds a contest.
