Hooley's Melbourne United to Play 76ers, Raptors
PHILADELPHIA - University at Albany alumnus Peter Hooley, who currently plays for Melbourne United of Australia’s National Basketball League, the nation's top basketball league, will return to the United States for two games against the Philadelphia 76ers and the Toronto Raptors.
UAlbany men’s basketball head coach Will Brown, who coached Hooley during his time as a Great Dane from 2011-16, will take the team to the Wells Fargo Center Friday night to attend United’s game against the 76ers, which tips off of at 7:00 p.m. EST and can be viewed on NBCSP+.
The game against the 76ers provides a specific intrigue with star Ben Simmons, who is from Australia. Additionally, 76ers head coach Brett Brown coached in the NBL and served as head coach of the Australia national team from 2009-12, and first-year player Jonah Bolden is also Australian.
United’s games against the 76ers and the Raptors are part of the second year of the NBLxNBA series. Last season, United nearly knocked off the Oklahoma City Thunder featuring Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, and Paul George. Hooley did not see time in that game.
Last season, Hooley appeared in 32 games for United, averaging 2.7 points and 1.1 rebounds in eight minutes per game. United won the NBL title 2018, Hooley's first with the team, and the team's first league title since 2008. Hooley graduated UAlbany as the seventh-highest scorer in program history, contributing to three consecutive America East championships.
Melbourne United plays the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, and the Toronto Raptors on Friday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
