Recap: The UAlbany men’s basketball team notched an important road victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating Hartford 69-63 to pull to within a half-game of third place in the America East.

The game had a low scoring start as both sides tried to establish play in the paint against the man-to-man defense.  Travis Charles scored five of UAlbany’s first six points, with Hartford using a stutter step three to go up 12-6 in the first seven-and-a-half minutes.

UAlbany looked to the perimeter to chip away, passing around the arc for an open player.  Costa Anderson led the three-point attack with a couple of makes, plus added a David Nichols sprint and score brought UAlbany within two.  Joe Cremo hit a floater, then a Nichols free throw made it 22-21 UAlbany with 4:25 left in the 1st.

After a three-point spurt put the home team back up, UAlbany finished the half on an 10-4 run, capped by a layup and one by Greig Stire, to go into the locker room up 32-28.

UAlbany went back to Charles from inside of 10 feet to lead the offense to begin half two.  He scored UAlbany’s first six points of the half to push to a 38-32 advantage 2:11 into the second half.

Travis Weatherington had a personal 5-0 run for Hartford to draw the Hawks within one, then after a Cremo free throw, John Carroll scored a layup to tie the game.  The sides exchanged again, a Nichols floater and one, followed by a J.R. Lynch three, to make it 42-42 with 11:45 left.

Cremo got fouled in two straight possessions, knocking down all four free throws to push UAlbany ahead again.  Anderson added a long jumper, then Cremo scored a transition layup to complete an 8-0 run and make it 50-42 UAlbany with under 10 minutes to go.

With Carroll leading the offense with shots from the perimeter, Hartford chipped away to one possession off a three, then with 3:12 left, Carroll’s free throws made it 55-54 UAlbany.

Next possession, Nichols stood behind the arc and swished a three for a four-point lead.  Following a Jason Dunne layup, UAlbany held a 58-56 advantage with 1:45 to play.

Playing off the shot clock, Cremo kicked out to Anderson, who drained the three.  Hartford airballed the next chance as the UAlbany defense held Hartford off the board the following three possessions, adding free throws from Cremo and Nichols to go up 66-56 with 30 seconds left.

Hartford went quickly and used the full court press for two layups to get back to six with 11 seconds to go.  UAlbany retained the lead with a few late free throws, taking the victory 69-63.

UAlbany plays next Thursday, February 15th in Massachusetts, taking on UMass Lowell at 7 p.m.
