Short Story: The UAlbany men’s basketball team earned its first 9-1 start in its Division I history, beginning the Gotham Classic with an 84-68 home victory over Bryant on Wednesday night.

Key Stats:

  • UAlbany: Joe Cremo led UAlbany with 24 points off 10 made field goals, adding six rebounds and four assists. David Nichols concluded with 17 points and four assists while Greig Stire had a double-double of 11 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.
  • Bryant: In his first start of the year, Brandon Carroll had 15 points, five boards and three steals. Ikenna Ndugba ended with 13 points and seven assists.
  • UAlbany starts the year at 9-1 for the first time since the 1993-94 season. UAlbany began that year 18-1 under Doc Sauers.
  • UAlbany outrebounded Bryant 40-27, notching 48 points in the paint to Bryant’s 20. UAlbany has outrebounded its opponents all 10 games this season.

 Key Situations:

  • 17:23-15:50 1st half: UAlbany goes on a 7-0 run, capped by three-point plays from Devonte Campbell and Joe Cremo, to lead 10-7.
  • 20:00-17:30 2nd half: Another 7-0 run, started by five straight points by David Nichols, gives UAlbany a 44-37 advantage to begin the second half.
  • 8:17-6:51 2nd half: UAlbany’s backcourt notched a 7-0 run in under 100 seconds to essentially seal the game as the Great Danes led 70-53.

Recap: The UAlbany men’s basketball team notched an 84-68 victory over Bryant to begin the Gotham Classic and improve to 9-1 for the first time since the 1993-94 season.  

After a quick four-point lead by Bryant, UAlbany responded with a 7-0 run, including four Devonte Campbell points and a layup and one by Joe Cremo, to go ahead 10-7 by the half’s first media timeout.

The teams exchanged the lead back and forth in the coming minutes.  Bryant kept firing away from long range, taking an 18-16 lead with a Brandon Carroll three-pointer.

UAlbany hit a couple of layups from its frontcourt members, then David Nichols hit a three to push UAlbany ahead with 9:27 in the 1st.  UAlbany held the lead with its defense until with 4:31 left in the 1st, Gus Riley scored a layup to tie the game at 27-27. 

The Great Danes went back up by five, sparked by a couple of layups underneath.  Bryant countered with three-point shooting, tying the game at 37-37 at the break. 

The UAlbany defense held Bryant without points in the first 2:30 of the second half.  Sparked by a jumper and a long three by Nichols, the Great Danes scored seven in a row to push ahead 44-37. 

UAlbany kept relying on its guards to keep the lead, with a 6-0 run fueled by Cremo and Campbell to make the home team’s advantage 10 at 55-45 with just over 13 minutes left.

Later, a three by Ikenna Ndugba made it 63-53 UAlbany with 8:17 to play.  UAlbany countered with scores in three consecutive possessions for a 7-0 run to put the Great Danes up 17.

Alex Foster hit a couple of layups down the stretch to increase UAlbany’s lead as the Great Danes finished off Bryant by allowing just two field goals in the final 3:30.  UAlbany took the 84-68 victory.

The battle for the Albany Cup will commence on Saturday, December 9th at the Times Union Center as the Great Danes battle Siena at 7:30 p.m.
