ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany men’s basketball team has been predicted to finish second in the America East Conference in the 2017-18, the league announced on Thursday.
UAlbany finished tied for third place last year with a 10-6 record. Finishing 21-14 overall, the Great Danes defeated Hartford and Stony Brook in the America East Tournament to earn a berth in the title game, falling to Vermont in Burlington.
The America East preseason poll was voted on by the league’s head coaches. Coaches could not vote for their own team. UAlbany received 57 points, including a first-place vote, to rank second.
UAlbany returns its top five scorers from last year, including two all-conference players: David Nichols earned First Team status with 17.9 points and 3.2 assists per game while Joe Cremo was placed on the Second Team with 15.8 points, 3.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds a contest. Each returns for his junior season.
Vermont, the defending America East champion, was unanimously picked to finish first in the league with eight first-place votes and 64 points. UMBC was predicted at third with 45 points while Stony Brook is at fourth with 38. The rest of the poll is filled out by New Hampshire (37), a tie between Binghamton (29) and UMass Lowell (29), Hartford (16) and Maine (8).
