ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany’s David Nichols has been selected as the 2016-17 America East Winter Scholar-Athlete for men’s basketball, the league announced on Thursday.
Nichols is one of five to be honored as America East Winter Scholar-Athletes. This award also puts Nichols in consideration for America East Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Nichols is the third UAlbany athlete to be a 2016-17 America East Scholar-Athlete. Paula Heuser of field hockey and Laini Leindecker of volleyball were selected as fall scholar-athletes.
On the court, the sophomore guard was America East All-Conference First Team, finishing fourth in the league with 17.9 points per game, eighth with 3.2 assists per game and sixth with 1.2 steals per game. He finished with double digit scoring in 33 games and also was placed on the America East All-Tournament Team, averaging 24.3 points a game in the three league tournament contests.
In the classroom, Nichols was a COSIDA Academic All-District I Team and America East All-Academic Team honoree, standing with a 3.88 GPA in communications. He has made the UAlbany Dean’s List in as many semesters eligible.
The other four 2016-17 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes are Sigi Koizar of Maine for women’s basketball, Emily Escobedo of UMBC for women’s swimming and diving, Jesse Orach of Maine for men’s indoor track & field and Elinor Purrier of New Hampshire for women’s indoor track & field.
