ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany added three America East Tournament titles during the winter season and holds the lead in the 2016-17 Stuart P. Haskell Jr. Commissioner’s Cup standings.
The Stuart P. Haskell Jr. Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East, including all 17 sports in the league. The cup awards success for all sports during the regular season and tournament play.
UAlbany has earned the last four Commissioner’s Cups and has five in its history, winning its first in the 2004-05 academic year. Last year, UAlbany earned 443 points, matching the league record for points in a single year for the cup.
After the winter season, UAlbany has 291 points, adding three America East titles from men’s indoor track, women’s indoor track and women’s basketball. UAlbany has a 40-point lead on second-place New Hampshire, at 251 points, going into the spring. UAlbany has a 103-point lead on third-place Stony Brook.
Winter Season Highlights:
--Men’s indoor track won its 12th consecutive America East title, including 10 individual champions out of a possible 20.
--Women’s indoor track won its fifth consecutive America East title, winning seven events, including two championship records.
--Women’s basketball won its sixth consecutive America East Tournament title after a second-place regular season finish. The team contributed 48 points to the standings, the most of any UAlbany team this year.
--Men’s basketball reached the America East Tournament title game, including a victory over 2-seed Stony Brook, after finishing third in the regular season.
