UAlbany Men’s Basketball Challenges Vermont for the 2017 America East Title on ESPN2

BURLINGTON, Vt.The UAlbany men's basketball team has returned to Patrick Gymnasium to take on Vermont for the 2017 America East title game on Saturday, March 11th at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.

The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and online on WatchESPN with Mike Corey and Brooke Weisbrod on the call from Burlington.  In addition, Rodger Wyland and Zach Bye will have the radio call in the Albany area on 104.5 the Team.

The University at Albany will be hosting a watch party for the game at the SEFCU Arena for the 11 a.m. contest starting at 10:30 a.m.  For more information, interested parties may contact the UAlbany ticket office at 518-442-DANE.

UAlbany comes to the America East title game for the fourth time in five years, and first time since 2015, with a 63-56 victory at Stony Brook on Monday.  3-seed UAlbany stands 21-12 overall and 10-6 in the America East.  Vermont is in the league title game for the second straight year, hosting it for the first time since 2013.  The 1-seed Catamounts advanced with a 74-41 win vs. UNH to be 28-5 overall and 16-0 in the America East.

The winner of this game will win the America East Tournament and earn the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.  UAlbany has five league titles in five title game appearances, including three in a row from 2013-15.  Vermont also has five America East titles in nine appearances, last winning in 2012 at Stony Brook.

Vermont swept the regular season series, winning on the road 60-49 and at home 62-50.  With the last two wins, Vermont leads the all-time series 24-14.  In the America East Tournament, UAlbany is 5-1 against Vermont, taking the last five meetings against the Catamounts since 2006 including both road contests for the 2007 and 2013 America East titles.

UALBANY IN THE AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT: UAlbany is making its sixth appearance in the America East title game.  The Great Danes have won all five league title games appeared in under Will Brown, including in 2006, 2007, 2013, 2014 and 2015.  Two title games, 2006 and 2015, were won at home, 2007 and 2013 were won at Vermont while 2014 was won at Stony Brook.

All-time, UAlbany is 19-10 in the America East Tournament, including 19-6 since the 2006 season.  UAlbany had a 9-game winning streak snapped in 2016.

FOUR GREAT DANES HONORED IN AE YEARLY AWARDS: Four Great Danes have been honored as the America East Conference has released the yearly awards for the 2016-17 men’s basketball season.

Two Great Danes have earned America East All-Conference honors: David Nichols is on the First Team and Joe Cremo lands on the Second Team.  Devonte Campbell is UAlbany’s representative on the America East All-Defensive Team.  In addition, Nichols, Cremo and Mike Rowley were placed on the America East All-Academic Team.

SEVEN WINNING LEAGUE SEASONS IN A ROW: UAlbany has earned a winning record in America East play each of the past seven seasons starting in the 2010-11 year, including a combined 28-4 tally from 2015-16.  UAlbany has earned 10 winning seasons in America East play in the last 12 under Will Brown, including this year.

THE DYNAMIC DUO: Joe Cremo and David Nichols have been a strong scoring pair this season, with each standing in the top-10 in points per game in the America East.  Between the two, they have 23 20+ point games and a combined 60 double digit scoring contests (of a possible 66) this season.

SWITCHING LINEUPS: UAlbany played the same starting five in 17 of the first 18 games this season: Joe Cremo, Marqueese Grayson, David Nichols, Mike Rowley and Greig Stire.  The last 15 games other than Senior Day, Devonte Campbell entered the lineup for Grayson; UAlbany is 12-3 in those contests.

SOPHOMORE SURGE FOR NICHOLS: David Nichols is having a strong sophomore season, averaging 18.1 points per game in his first 33 contests.  He has earned 31 double digit scoring games this year after having none last season, averaging 2.7 points per game in 15 contests played in 2015-16.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME......OR THE ROAD: UAlbany earned the same record in America East play this season at home and on the road.  The Great Danes are 5-3 in America East road games vs. 5-3 in conference home games this year.  Overall, UAlbany is 9-7 away from SEFCU.

STREAKS: Mike Rowley has grabbed at least one rebound each of the past 99 games, including the entire 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.  Greig Stire has earned at least one board in each of the past 69 games, including a single game record 15 rebounds at Hartford on January 22nd.

The first guard off the bench last season, Joe Cremo has scored points in each of his last 64 games going back to Nov. 19, 2015.  Cremo has also dished out at least one assist in each of the past 28 games.  David Nichols has also scored each game this year and is on a 35-game scoring streak.

SCOUTING VERMONT: Vermont, with the league’s top scoring defense at 61.8 points a game, is the only team in America East history to earn a 16-0 conference season.  Junior guard Trae Bell-Haynes earned America East Player of the Year, averaging 11.2 points and 3.8 assists per game.  America East Rookie of the Year Anthony Lamb is the team leading scorer, picking up 12.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a contest.
