UAlbany Volleyball Ends AE Regular Season at Stony Brook on Friday Night

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UAlbany volleyball team has earned the America East regular season title and will finish the conference regular season on Friday, November 10th at 7 p.m. at Stony Brook.

UAlbany has locked up the 1-seed in the upcoming America East Tournament and will serve as host for the meet on November 17-18 at the University Gym. Only UAlbany has secured a berth in the America East Tournament with the final weekend of league play left.

UAlbany has won nine matches in a row, wrapping up the outright regular season title with a three-set victory over Hartford on Sunday, to stand 10-13 overall and 10-1 in the America East.  Stony Brook saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a five-set home loss to New Hampshire, entering tied for third place in the America East at 6-4 and 16-10 overall.

UAlbany has won six matches in a row against Stony Brook, including a four-set home victory on October 15th.  All-time, the Great Danes are 30-12 against the Seawolves, including winning the last two matches on Long Island.

UALBANY EARNS 10TH AE REGULAR SEASON TITLE: With the three-set victory over Hartford, UAlbany secured its tenth America East regular season title in program history.  It is the first title since 2015 and the first outright title since 2012.  UAlbany’s 10 titles have come since 2004, with all other programs combining for five.

APPROACHING ENGSTROM’S 100TH LEAGUE WIN: As UAlbany’s head coach, MJ Engstrom is one league victory away from her 100th win in America East regular season play.  In total, Engstrom’s UAlbany teams are 99-20 (83.2%) in the America East regular season.

The Great Danes have won at least nine America East matches in 10 out of 11 years and double digit league victories in seven of those years.

NICOLE OTERO JOINS 1000-DIG CLUB: UAlbany’s starting libero beginning in the 2015 season, Nicole Otero joined the 1,000-dig club on September 1st vs. St. John’s, currently standing at 1,319 for 7th all-time at UAlbany.  The two-time America East All-Conference Second Team libero and 2015 America East Defensive Specialist of the Year has averaged 4.7 digs per set in her collegiate career and had at least 475 digs in each of her first two years.

She also is 66 digs away from tying for 6th all-time in UAlbany history with Jessica Volke, who had 1,385 digs from 1989-1992.

LAST TIME: UALBANY WIN THREE-SETTERS VS. UMBC, HARTFORD: UAlbany continued its winning streak with three-set home victories against UMBC (25-14, 25-19, 25-21) and Hartford (25-16, 25-16, 25-11) to secure the 1-seed in the upcoming America East Tournament.

Akuabata Okenwa led UAlbany in kills in both matches, hitting .333 with 20 kills and 16 digs.  Taylor Robinson hit .458 for 13 kills and four blocks while Nicole Otero tallied 33 digs and 11 assists.

AQUA ATTACKS: Akuabata Okenwa is third in the America East with 3.29 kills per set, totaling a team-high 253 kills on the year.  Going into conference play, the redshirt sophomore led UAlbany in kills in the last seven matches, and led the team in kills in seven of the last 10 league matches.

Chloe Evering is second on the team with 164 kills.  Each Okenwa and Evering earned a place on the 2016 America East All-Rookie Team.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: The primary offensive player for Stony Brook is redshirt junior outside hitter Emily Costello with a team-best 261 kills and 35 aces, adding 292 digs and 36 blocks.  Junior middle blocker McKyla Brooks hits .321 with 253 kills and 80 blocks while sophomore outside hitter Maria Poole hits .279 with 226 kills.

LAST MEETING: In a match where the four sets were decided by a difference of 10 total points, UAlbany defeated Stony Brook (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23) at home on October 15th.  Tatiana Tiangco hit .306 with 15 kills while Akuabata Okenwa had a double double of 11 kills and 12 digs.  Maria Poole led Stony Brook off 17 kills while McKyla Brooks hit .467 with 14 kills and six digs.
