ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany head volleyball coach Josh Pickard announced the Great Danes’ 2019 schedule Tuesday. The campaign features five home matches inside University Gym and four early season tournaments.
The 2019 season features three opponents that competed in the 2019 NCAA Tournament including South Carolina, UCF and Stony Brook. The non-league slate includes a variety of opponents from the Atlantic 10, BIG EAST, Big 12, Big Sky and the SEC.
"This year we have a strong mix of strong competition and regional competition," said Pickard. "Our goal is to be playing our best volleyball at the end of the year, during conference play. These early season tournaments are to help prepare us for the end."
The Great Danes open the season in Nebraska at the Omaha Challenge, which runs Aug. 30-31 and features Omaha, Idaho State and Abilene Christian.
A road trip to Orlando Fla. for the UCF Challenge follows, where the Great Danes square off against Kansas, UCF and South Carolina, Sept. 6-8.
UAlbany then visits Towson, Md. to compete in the Towson Invitational from Sept. 13-14. The team opens with a pair of games that Friday against Coastal Carolina and Youngstown State . The Great Danes will then face host Towson on Saturday to round out the tournament.
UAlbany stays on the road for a single match at George Washington on Sept. 16.
The Great Danes close out their early season tournaments with a trip to Rhode Island for the Art Carmichael Invitational, where they take on host Rhode Island, Bryant and Boston College, Sept. 20-21.
America East play opens with the squad’s home opener on Oct. 4 against New Hampshire before hitting the road for weekend matches at Stony Brook (Oct. 11) and Hartford (Oct. 13).
UAlbany returns home the following Friday for a 7 p.m. bout with instate foe Binghamton. Other league home matches include UMBC (Oct. 25), Hartford (Nov. 8) and Stony Brook (Nov. 11).
The Great Danes finished second in the America East last season with a 9-3 mark in conference play. The team returns 10 letter winners from the previous season.
