UAlbany Volleyball Releases Challenging 2017 Slate

UAlbany Sports Information   06-09-2017

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany volleyball team, which has played in the last three America East title matches, has announced its schedule for the 2017 season.

UAlbany has a powerful schedule in 2017, with 11 of 12 non-conference opponents having winning records last season.  UAlbany will play five teams that played in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

“Our pre-conference schedule is very challenging this year: we make two trips out West to play some awesome competition in Southern California and Colorado plus some regional powers for both Villanova and our home tournament,” said UAlbany head coach MJ Engstrom. “Eight teams on our schedule were either in the NCAA tournament or on the bubble last year, with three-quarters of the teams having RPIs under 80. I'm also excited about having our first home tournament in nine years!”

UAlbany is set to host a home tournament on September 1st and 2nd, welcoming St. John's, Colgate and Temple to the University Gym for a combined six matches.  It is the first home invitational for UAlbany since 2009.

Last season, UAlbany earned its second straight winning season and sixth overall under Engstrom, who became the program's all-time winningest coach in Division I competition.  Including victories over UConn and St. John's, UAlbany was 16-10 overall and 9-3 in America East play, earning a place in the America East title match for the third consecutive season.

UAlbany starts the 2017 campaign in Los Angeles in the Baden Invitational at USC on Friday, August 25th and Saturday, August 26th.  All dates and times for the matches are to be determined. UAlbany will play Michigan, a 2016 NCAA Round of 16 participant, tournament host USC, which played in last year's NCAA Tournament, and Loyola Marymount.

The Purple & Gold welcome three teams to the University Gym for its home tournament the next weekend.  UAlbany hosts St. John's for a night match at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 1st.  On Saturday, September 2nd, UAlbany plays Colgate, the 2016 Patriot League runner-up, at 1 p.m. and Temple, third place in the AAC last year, at 7 p.m.

The Great Danes head south to the suburbs of Philadelphia to compete in the Villanova Classic, starting with a match against UConn on Friday, September 8th at 11 a.m. then Princeton, the defending Ivy League champion, later at 5 p.m.  The team finishes the invitational against tournament host Villanova the following day at 2:30 p.m.

UAlbany plays its final in-season tournament of the year in the state of Colorado.  The Great Danes challenge the tournament host Colorado State, which played in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, on the opening day of the invitational, Friday, September 15th at 9 p.m. ET (7 p.m. MT).  On Saturday, September 16th, UAlbany has matches against Pac-12 member Colorado at 1 p.m. ET (11 a.m. MT) and Xavier at 7 p.m. ET (5 p.m. MT).

The team begins America East play with three home matches, starting with SUNY rival Binghamton on Friday, September 22nd at 7 p.m.  The next weekend, UAlbany plays a pair of contests in two days, taking on UNH in a rematch of the America East title match on Friday, September 29th at 7 p.m. then UMass Lowell on 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 30th.

To the road for the next two matches for UAlbany, starting at Hartford on Friday, October 6th at 7 p.m., then at UMBC in Baltimore on Sunday, October 8th at 1 p.m.

The first half of America East play concludes with a home match against rival Stony Brook on Sunday, October 15th at 2 p.m.

UAlbany has three road matches to go into the second half of conference competition, beginning with a match at Binghamton on Friday, October 20th at 7 p.m.  Next weekend, UAlbany heads to New England, first to take on UMass Lowell on Friday, October 27th at 7 p.m., then later to play UNH on Sunday, October 29th at 1 p.m.

The final two home regular season matches of the year will take place the next weekend.  UAlbany hosts UMBC on Friday, November 3rd at 7 p.m. for Senior Night, then takes on Hartford on Sunday, November 5th at 2 p.m.

UAlbany completes the America East regular season on Friday, November 10th on Long Island, playing Stony Brook at 7 p.m.

The America East Tournament will be hosted by the league's regular season champion, with the top four teams participating.  The semifinals will either be on November 17th or 18th, with the title match being the following day.
