UAlbany Volleyball Opens America East Tournament with Semifinal Match vs. UMBC
DURHAM, N.H. – UAlbany volleyball, the 2-seed in the America East Tournament, will open the league semifinals with a rematch against 3-seed UMBC on Friday, November 18th at 4 p.m. at the Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham, New Hampshire.
The match will air online for free of charge to the public on AmericaEast.tv.
The Great Danes finished in second place in the America East at 9-3 in league play and 15-9 overall, trying to snap a two-match losing streak after falling to UNH in three sets last Friday. UMBC fell in its season finale to Hartford on Saturday for third place in the America East at 8-4 and 17-8 overall.
The winner of this match will meet the victor of 1-seed UNH and 4-seed Binghamton in the America East title match on Saturday, November 19th at 4 p.m. in Durham.
UAlbany and UMBC split their meetings in the regular season, with each winning the road contest. UAlbany won 3-1 in Baltimore on October 7th while UMBC got a five-set victory in Albany on November 6th.
UAlbany is looking to return to the America East title match for the third consecutive year. The team is also playing in its 15th consecutive America East Tournament.
UALBANY PLAYERS CHASING RECORDS: Two UAlbany players have etched their names to the record book. Amanda Dolan stands with 434 total blocks for 2nd place in program history, serving as the UAlbany all-time leader in Division I. Chris Hofer holds the UAlbany record with 597 blocks from 1984-87.
Mikala McCauley is currently in the UAlbany record book, standing 4th in program history with 3,148 assists. She is 112 away from 3rd. The UAlbany record is 5,049 by Blair Buchanan from 2003-06.
Laini Leindecker, the newest member of the UAlbany 1,000-dig club, also became a member of the 1,000-kill club on October 30th. She is the fourth player in UAlbany program history to earn over 1,000 kills and digs.
McCauley is also approaching the 1,000 dig mark, standing with 991 in her career. Nina Holmes earned 1,005 digs in two years at Feather River College.
LAST TIME: UALBANY FALLS AT UNH IN SEASON FINALE: UAlbany fell in its final regular season match of the year to New Hampshire in three sets (12-25, 15-25, 12-25), which gave the Wildcats hosting rights to the America East Tournament.
Laini Leindecker had a team-best seven kills, adding six digs and an ace. Akuabata Okenwa got five kills while Nicole Otero had 17 digs.SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
UMBC stands second in the America East in hitting percentage (.197) and opponent hitting percentage (.177).
At senior middle blocker, Zoya Trendafilova holds top-10 places in the America East in hitting percentage at .252 and kills with 274. Second in the America East with 3.61 kills per set, junior outside hitter Abbie Mirabella has 271 kills, 22 aces and 151 digs. Sophomore Kristin Watson is the conference leader in digs with 478.LAST MEETING:
The Great Danes fell in their season finale to UMBC in five sets (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 7-15) to split the season series against the Retrievers.
Laini Leindecker had a double-double for UAlbany with 12 kills and 19 digs, as did Mikala McCauley with 48 assists and 11 digs. Zoya Trendafilova had a double-double off 23 kills and 15 digs, with Ashley Ramos getting 13 kills.WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY
UAlbany’s front row currently leads the America East with 2.48 blocks per set, a thrid of a block more than second-place Binghamton. Amanda Dolan, with 1.22 blocks per set, and Taylor Robinson, with 1.06 blocks per set, stand first and third in the league respectively.
