Short Story: UAlbany’s comeback attempt falls short in an elimination game against six-seed Hartford, ending the 2019 season.

Coach Mueller: “When you have big goals that you don’t achieve there’s disappointment.  We wanted to play better at home this year, and we did that.  We wanted to get a one or two seed in the tournament, and we got that done.  But I think it caught up with us a little bit.  We had won so many games in a row and we were playing so well, and it’s hard to duplicate that.  These aren’t professional players, they’re college kids.  But we’re really proud of these kids.  The seniors nearly won 100 games for us and made it to four straight tournaments, and brought us to our first two-seed in a long time.  We’re disappointed, but a lot of good things came out of this.  The seniors have really been pillars for the younger guys to follow, and we’re really proud of the group as a whole.  We’re looking forward to next year and our seniors, who have set such a good precedent for us for the next couple of years, will be off to bigger and better things.”

Recap

The University at Albany baseball team saw its season come to an end Friday in an elimination game against six-seed Hartford.  The Hawks opened up a 5-0 lead before UAlbany broke through with three runs in the eighth, but the comeback came up short.

Hartford saw baserunners reach second and third in each of the first three innings, finally breaking through in the top of the third with a two-RBI double.

UAlbany starter Ray Weber was struck by a comebacker in the leg in the top of the fifth inning and was replaced by closer Joe Kruszka.  Hartford scored twice in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.  The Hawks added one run in the top of the seventh to lead 5-0.

With two on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, Matt Codispoti hit an RBI single to put UAlbany on the board for the first time.  In the next at bat, Marc Wangestein scored from third on a wild pitch from Hartford’s new relief pitcher.  Codispoti scored when Kevin Donati, pinch-hitting for Dolan Ocasal, singled to center.  The inning ended with runners on second and third with Nick Kondo just missing beating out an infield single.

Hartford retired UAlbany in order in the bottom of the ninth.  Wangenstein fouled off five straight pitches with two out and no one on before grounding out to third, ending the game.

Weber lasted 4.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts before departing in the fifth after getting struck by a line drive.  Kruszka pitched the next 3.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts.  Wangenstein finished hitting 2-5 with a run scored.  Kondo reached base safely twice, drawing two walks, but saw his 15-game hitting streak come to an end.

UAlbany finishes the season 28-23 overall.

Next: UAlbany’s season is over.  Hartford advances to play host Binghamton in an elimination game Friday night, with the winner advancing to the championship to face top seed Stony Brook.
