Baseball Gears Up For the America East Tournament

UAlbany Sports Information   05-21-2019

ALBANY, N.Y. – The red-hot University at Albany baseball team has clinched the two-seed and a first-round bye in the America East Tournament, marking their fourth-straight appearance in the postseason.  The Great Danes closed the regular season on a nine-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 46-12 during that stretch.

UAlbany (28-21, 14-9 AE) is the hottest team entering the tournament, and last swept Hartford in the final America East series of the regular season, pushing their winning streak to nine and winning eight of their final 10 against America East opponents, including each of the last six.  The Great Danes’ 28 victories are the most since 2007, which was the last time the Danes won the America East title.  The last time UAlbany earned the second-seed in the America East Tournament was 2011.

Stony Brook clinched the top overall seed for the fifth time in program history, and will enjoy a first-round by with the Great Danes.  UAlbany will open tournament play on Thursday against the winner of three-seed and tournament host Binghamton and six-seed and defending champion Hartford.  Stony Brook will play the winner of four-seed UMass Lowell and five-seed Maine.

The top three teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season, Stony Brook, UAlbany, and Binghamton each had nine conference losses.  UAlbany finished one victory behind Stony Brook in-conference, but shared the top overall record in the America East with the Seawolves at 28-21.

Last season, UAlbany clinched the six-seed on the final day of the regular season, defeating UMBC to eliminate Binghamton from contention.  The Danes met UMBC in their first game, knocking off the Retrievers once again to advance to the winner’s bracket.  On the second day of the tournament, the Great Danes fell in succession to two-seed UMass Lowell and then to five-seed and tournament host Maine to end the season.

Statistically, UAlbany finished the regular season second in the America East in batting (.269) and pitching (5.14 ERA), and third in fielding (.977).  Stony Brook led in batting (.276) and fielding (.980) and Binghamton led in pitching (.416 ERA).  Individually, Marc Wangenstein led all players with 50 RBIs, Patrick Lagravinese shared the lead with seven triples, Dominic Savino led with a .224 opposing batting average, and Joe Kruszka led with 10 saves.

The 2019 America East Tournament begins Wednesday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m.  The first nine games can be streamed on AmericaEast.tv and the championship round will stream on ESPN+.
